MESQUITE, NOV. 22 -- In theory, the high school football playoffs become more difficult every week, but the Paul Pewitt Brahmas are dealing in reality. Scurry-Rosser learned that lesson the hard way Saturday night at Mesquite Memorial Stadium, falling to a determined team of Bulls, 35-0, in a Class 2A, Division I second-round playoff game.
Paul Pewitt (9-3) won its seventh straight game and moved into next week's Region II finals against Boyd, which defeated Howe on Thursday night. That game is tentatively set for Saturday, possibly at Homer B. Johnson Stadium in Garland.
The Brahmas came out strong, scoring twice in each of the first two quarters and throwing up a defense that forced five Wildcat turnovers. Pewitt fullback Ben Johnson rushed for 150 yards on 12 carries and quarterback Jimmy Wilkerson had a hand in each of the first four Brahma touchdowns.
Wilkerson sandwiched scoring runs of 2 and 6 yards with touchdown tosses of 10 yards to Delwyn Johnson and 26-yards to Hercules Tarver. Both of Paul Pewitt's second-quarter touchdowns were set up by pass interceptions. The first by James Gilmore was returned 51 yards. The second by Kenny Boyd was returned 40 yards.
Johnson, who had 97 yards on six carries at the half, wrapped up the scoring with a 1-yard run in the fourth period. Jarvis Hill converted all four PATs as Pewitt won for the ninth time. Scurry-Rosser ends its season at 9-3.
Boyd, the Brahmas' leading rusher this season, had only 38 yards in the first half and finished the contest with 78 on eight carries
FIGHT TO THE FINISH
The Boyd Yellowjackets lost their Class 2A regional playoff game to Omaha Paul Pewitt 38-32 Saturday night in Garland, but the game wasn't decided until the final seconds.
Boyd had the lead with four minutes left after Chad Williams had completed touchdown passes of 12 and 42 yards to Tommy Clutter. But with 1:19 remaining, Paul Pewitt sealed the victory with a touchdown.
Boyd was inside the Brahmas' 20-yard line when time expired on its brilliant season. The Yellowjackets finished with an 11-2 record that included a District 10-2A championship and an 11-game winning streak.

FROM THE WISE COUNTY MESSENGER
SAD FINALE
Just hours before Saturday's playoff game, Herbert Huff, 44, the father of Boyd football players Matt and Michael Huff, was killed when his vehicle overturned on FM 730 just a mile north of Boyd.
The accident occurred about 11:30 a.m. as Huff was attempting to pass a line of vehicles just north of the detour around the Trinity River bridge. Huff was heading south when he lost control of his minivan. The vehicle left the road, overturned and hit the fence of the Boyd water treatment facility.
The Huff boys learned of their fathers death less than four hours before the game. "They found out right before they came to the field house," Boyd coach J. G. Cartwright said. Both boys, who started in the offensive and defensive backfield, played in the game.
Funeral for Huff will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in Boyd with burial in Boyd Cemetery. Christian-Hawkins Funeral Home is handling the service.

WICHITA FALLS - "Speed kills." It was more than a spirit sign hung by the Omaha Paul Pewitt cheerleaders - it was the tale of Brahmas' 55-19 Class 2A Division I state semifinal convincing victory over Canadian on Saturday night at Memorial Stadium.
Pewitt scored four touchdowns on its first 11 offensive snaps of the game, and after Canadian climbed within 28-12 at halftime, the Brahmas scored two touchdowns in a 16-second span of the third quarter to pull away for good.
"Their speed caught up to us," said Canadian linebacker Ty Dickinson, who returned an interception 99 yards for the Wildcats' first score. "Their dive play, we just couldn't stop it. They have tremendous speed. So do we, but they had all the breaks."
Pewitt fullback Ben Johnson and quarterback Jimmy Wilkerson combined for 330 yards rushing, and four touchdowns on only 22 carries to lead the Brahmas' big-play offense. Tailback Kenny Boyd added 78 yards rushing and three touchdowns as the Brahmas rolled up 501 yards rushing against a Canadian defense that came in allowing only 138 total yards per game.
Canadian got back into the game with two touchdowns in a 13-second span of the final minute of the first half.
Dickinson's interception return was followed by quarterback Derek Maupin's 19-yard scoring pass to Luke Farrar that pulled the Wildcats to within 28-12 at intermission.
But Pewitt turned two Canadian turnovers into touchdowns in the third quarter to turn the game into a rout.
The Wildcats defense stopped Pewitt on its first possession of the third quarter. Canadian then drove to the Pewitt 40 before Jose Morales fumbled after a pass reception.
Pewitt scored in only three play as Johnson's 54-yard run set up Wilkerson's three-yard scoring that gave the Brahmas a 34-12 lead.
On the ensuing kickoff, Jerome Cobbins recovered Dickinson's fumble at the Canadian 26. On the next play, Wilkerson ran around his left end for a touchdown to give Pewitt a 41-12 lead with 3:53 left in the third quarter. At that point, Johnson, Boyd and Wilkerson each had 10 carries for a combined 380 yards (a 12.7-yard average).
"The fumbles were a stab in the heart," Dickinson said. "Fumbles are so crucial in playoff games. You've got to avoid them."
Pewitt's eight touchdown possessions totaled only 21 plays with the longest drive of five plays. The Brahmas, who will meet Brookshire-Royal for the state title next weekend, had three touchdowns possessions of just one play, and three more of three plays.
Canadian's final score of the contest came when linebacker Rex Lovelace scooped up a Pewitt fumble and raced 49 yards that made it 48-19 with 2:07 left.
In typical fashion, the Brahmas scored on the first play after the kickoff after reserve tailback Kenny Cooper raced 54 yards into the end zone.
The Wildcats were eight yards away from falling behind 35-0 when they suddenly scored two touchdowns in 13 seconds to get within 28-12 at halftime.
Pewitt, already ahead 28-0, faced a second-and-goal from the Canadian 8 when Wilkerson attempted his second pass of the night. However Dickinson intercepted Wilkerson at the one and out sprinted three Brahmas on a 99-yard return to cut Pewitt's lead to 28-6 with 59 seconds left in the first half.
The Wildcats tried a high, short kickoff that Pewitt's Hercules Tarver could not field. After a high bounce off the turf, Canadian's Coleman Bartlett recovered at the Pewitt 19.
On the next play, Maupin just beat a heavy rush and threw to Farrar, who made a diving catch on a low throw in the end zone. The score with 46 seconds left in the half got Canadian within 28-12 at the break.
Pewitt's speed stunned Canadian's defense from the start, as the Brahmas scored four touchdowns on their first 11 offensive snaps.
A defensive stand and a 21-yard punt set up Pewitt at midfield for its first possession. On third-and-1 from the Canadian 41, Wilkerson ran a quarterback sneak cleanly through the Wildcats' line and cut outside for a 41-yard touchdown run. Pewitt led 7-0 only 3:25 into the game.
Canadian answered with a 10-play drive to the Brahmas' 10, sparked by Maupin's 27-yard pass to Justin Billenwillms. However, Boyd intercepted a Maupin pass in the end zone, wrestling the ball from Farrar.
The Brahmas, with Johnson breaking off a 66-yard run, went 80 yards in only three plays as Boyd scored unchallenged on a six-yard run that gave Pewitt a 13-0 lead with 2:35 left in the first quarter.
Canadian again answered as Morales returned the kickoff 50 yards to the Pewitt 44. However Pewitt stopped Dickinson for a two-yard gain on a screen pass on fourth-and-five from the 39.
This time, Pewitt scored in four plays as Wilkerson broke another quarterback sneak for 29 yards, setting up Boyd's 25-yard scoring run that made it 21-0 on the second play of the second quarter.
Pewitt had to go only 16 yards for its next score after the deep snap sailed over the head of Canadian punter Travis Francis.
On the next play, Johnson bursted through the line for a 16-yard touchdown run that made it 28-0 with 9:27 left in the second quarter.
Before Canadian's furious finish before the half, the Wildcats had a 55-yard touchdown pass from Maupin to Morales wiped out by a penalty.
