Mr. King's major films grace all substantial movie theaters and, when released, are easily available at most businesses that sell movies. The shorts, however, can be difficult to come by, most of them "dollar-babies" and thus produced independently.

First on the list, the DVD release of Nightmares and Dreamscapes did occur on October 24th and should be widely available. And if you've been hearing some Mist rumors, you need look no further for details. Frank Darabont, of The Green Mile and Shawshank Redemption fame, will direct the film and told CHUD, "It’ll be a pretty fast and furious narrative, really." In the interview he also mentioned that casting has begun and shooting will likely start in February. Dimension Films is apparently "really embracing the darker and edgier choices" and allowing Darabont the creative room to give the movie its King-ly flavor. CHUD summed it up in the following: 'Darabont is returning to King territory with a long-awaited adaptation of The Mist, a novella about a thick, strange mist filled with deadly monsters that comes upon a small town. A group of people take refuge in a local supermarket; bad things happen.' If you missed the October ABC interview with Mr. King on Good Morning America, you can watch the streaming video of it by clicking here. Other possible films to come include a King-adapted Gerald's Game starring Nicole Kidman, if Craig R. Baxley gets his way (he previously worked on Kingdom Hospital and Storm of the Century). And, last but not least, word comes that Eli Roth has chosen writers Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski to pen the screenplay of Cell.

Well, unless you've been living under a rock the past month or so you will have seen or at least heard of the TNT Nightmares and Dreamscapes four-week series. So far the episodes include Battleground, Crouch End, Umney's Last Case, and The End of the Whole Mess. Still to come? The Last Quarter, You Know They Got A Hell of A Band, and The Road Virus Heads North. (Yeah, I know that last one wasn't in the original Nightmares and Dreamscapes collection but you know Hollywood...) And unless one of those three is a two-hour special, there will be a fourth episode as well. If you're interested in adding the series to your own collection, the DVD release is rumored to be October 24th. Look for the three-disk set on Warner Home Video with special features like "an unaired extended episode starring William H. Macy" (most likely Umney's Last Case as about 15 minutes were edited from the originally planned full-hour run), commentary tracks with the cast and crew, and exclusive documentaries. Sounds good. And if the rest of the series is as well done as the first half, it'll be worth it. Click here
to see the proposed cover art for the DVD set. And tune in Wednesday at 9 Eastern to see the newest episodes.

Okay, let me first apologize for disappearing some seven weeks ago. I made a large move and it took quite a bit longer than expected to get settled. My apologies. Secondly, let me apologize for referring to Desperation as a miniseries when it was really a slightly longer-than-average made-for-TV movie. Now the good stuff. In case you haven't already heard elsewhere, the Nightmares and Dreamscapes series begins July 12 on TNT. And though the general opinion of Desperation wasn't as high as expected (simply too condensed, I believe), hopefully Nightmares and Dreamscapes will prove more viewer-friendly for King fans and newcomers alike. Set your recorders.

While this isn't exactly breaking news, in case you haven't checked your programming guides lately, the ABC miniseries Desperation has been pushed to a later date. Instead of airing on Thursday May 18th, as originally planned, it will now begin airing on Tuesday May 23rd, a "stronger night" for viewing it seems. Same time, 8 pm, so just make sure to get the right day.

The King-Mellencamp project The Ghost Brothers of Darkland County is looking for a director, according to Mellencamp. "Elton John opened his musical in San Francisco, and it lasted all of seven days before they closed it down and decided to rework it." So they currently plan to begin in another city, like Chicago, to smooth off the rough edges and "get the kinks out before we try to take it to Broadway." He added, "When we hit Broadway, we want it ready."

The Sci Fi Channel has acquired the right to re-air several King miniseries, including 'Salem's Lot, The Langoliers, Rose Red and Storm of the Century. Also on the playlist is Kingdom Hospital, scheduled to play in four-hour blocks on Tuesday nights starting April 11. Mark it on your calendars.

Breaking news on the movie front involving two King stories and Dimension Films. Dimension has acquired movie rights to Cell and is planning a full-length feature. Eli Roth (of Hostel) will direct and possibly write or co-write the screenplay; Mike Fleiss and Chris Briggs are to produce. Dimension Films also claimed 1408 (from the Blood and Smoke audio collection and, later, Everything's Eventual). John Cusack has been cast in the role of Mike Enslin, the short story's protagonist. The film will be directed by Mikael Hafstrom and was adapted for the big screen by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski.

[Co-posted on Book and General News as well] How would you like to have Stephen King in your living room for an hour? Well, okay, since he's not really big on house-calls, here's the next best thing: radio. If you missed the hour program with Stephen King on Voice of America's program Talk to America, it's still not too late to listen in. The show originally aired on February 17th and is available for free download, just follow the link below. As part of the show, Mr. King answered questions posed by listeners, including those relating to future projects (a third Talisman and Dark Tower mention, among others). Downloads are available in RealAudio or mp3.

The new TNT series Nightmares and Dreamscapes, based on Mr. King's collection of short stories with the same title, are scheduled to start airing in June. Oh, and Happy Valentine's Day.

Just a small update for the Desperation mini-series airing this spring. Set your VCRs, DVRs, iPods, mobile phones, left shoes, and all other video recording devices for Thursday, May 18th, at 8:00 p.m. And be sure you're tuned to ABC or you might just get two hours of Martha Stuart tips for tasteful napkin origami.

A short and vague update first: work continues on Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, the project with John Mellancamp. I also wanted to add that a set of new webpages are up and running, King's Favorites. These pages outline the music, movies, and books that Mr. King liked best in the last year. New information will be posted as it is made available so check back periodically for updates. To visit the pages, follow the link below.

Okay, so it's not exactly a movie, and it certainly isn't new, but you may find it interesting anyway. A website called X-Entertainment offers a free download of an American Express commercial that aired in the 1980's. And why should this interest you? Well, you might recognize the principle actor; his name is Stephen King. (No kidding.) The quality leaves a little to be desired but it's all in good fun. To stream or download the commerical, follow the link below.

Happy Veteran's Day. And if you're a veteran of Stephen King movies, it's going to get a little happier: Variety magazine just published a short piece involving George Romero's upcoming version of From A Buick 8. Chesapeake Films are handling production and two of their main men, Johnathon Schaech and Richard Chizmar, wrote the script for the movie. (These same guys are scripting the King and Straub collaboration Black House.) According to Variety, From A Buick 8's schedule is "ramping up" but still no word on a possible release date. It appears Dolan's Cadillac will not be made into a movie as Mr. King has "taken back" the rights. No further information on the project was available.

Ready for the 2nd Annual Dollar Baby Film Festival? If you're not familiar with the event, it's a fantastic two-day airing of King-inspired Dollar Babies beginning with a Friday night premiere of Stephen King's Gotham Cafe on September 30. Films slated for Saturday October 1 include Autopsy Room 4, Strawberry Spring, The Road Virus Heads North, Sorry Right Number, and The Last Rung on the Ladder, among many others. Bronson Arroyo, #61 hurler for the Boston Red Sox, released a cover album, Covering the Bases, yesterday. And what's that have to do with Mr. King? Besides being a huge Bosox fan, King has musical inclinations (i.e. the Rock Bottom Remainders) and contributed additional lyrics and spoken word on Arroyo's fourth track "Everlong." The album has received favorable if only mildly enthusiastic reviews and is available through most major music distributors. To check out Covering the Bases on Amazon, follow the first link below. And for those of you in the Boston area who are interested, Arroyo performs at the Avalon Ballroom on Landsdowne Street tonight. Visit #61's official website, linked below as well, for more general info and a music sampler (upper right-hand corner, click on "Launch Music Player").
