War Bow Suppliers on The Net

Below is a list of Web sites where you can find archery resources useful for the SCA. Again, the main focus of this web page is on sites where 30# war bows can be found, but these suppliers all sell other types of bows as well. The information here was mostly found by web surfing and I cannot personally vouch for the companies or their products. If you do find any errors, email me and the companies. And if you have a web site you would like to see added, please e-mail me so I can put it here.

There are two lists here: Basic Suppliers, and Expensive Suppliers. The "Expensive" list includes Japanese Bows. Sites were put in the first list if I thought their prices were close to reasonable. They went in the second list if they advertise only custom work, or if their lowest price on a bow is $200 or more -- if you have the money and the inclination to spend hundreds of dollars on a fancy bow, proceed to the second list. Sites that advertise only modern compound bows are not included at all.

Sites that sell crossbows which could be used for SCA combat shooting will be included no matter what the prices, because crossbows that can handle 1-1/4" heads are fairly rare.
Some places that didn't make the list.

Basic Suppliers

*** 3 Rivers Archery ***

For 30-pound war bows, check out the ''Youth Archery'' section; the very first item is perfect for the battlefield, and it's only $30. Also check under Martin Bows for nice (but more expensive) youth recurves and longbows.

*** Martin Archery ***

Martin has war-legal bows under a couple of headings. For simple fiberglass war bows, go to their site and click on "Accessories" and then on "Youth Bows." Or, for more expensive laminates, click on "Bows" and then look under either "Longbows" or "Recurves." Many of the laminates are light enough for combat use.

*** New World Arbalest ***

Master Iolo's work -- THE name in crossbows to Ansteorrans.
Quicks Archery
English company; bows, including longbows, of various weights down to 30#. Prices are given in English pounds. Longbows are a little expensive but they have less expensive war-legal recurves.
The Bowman
Just about everything you can think of for archery. War-legal bows under ''Recurves.''
Orion Traditional Archery
Look under ''Youth Bows'' for 30# bows. Good laminated recurves, but a touch pricey.
** Archery Headquarters **
Site is a little hard to read, but under the ''Youth Recurve'' section they have lots of war-legal bows, some less than $50.
** Medieval Archers Supply **
Crossbow maker located in Washington state.
Alchem Inc.
Sells crossbow parts and plans. Links to other crossbow suppliers.
Allen Pitts
    Custom crossbows.
Alternative Sporting Services
English site; prices in pounds sterling.
R&R Sports Center
In Lewes, Maryland. Sells PSE recurves - site has a link to PSE catalog.

The Archer's Nook

Canadian company, prices in Canada and US currency. In catalog, look under ''Indian'' and ''Sam Wha'' for war-legal bows.
Meric Archery
Run by SCA folks; some war-legal longbows and recurves.

Expensive Suppliers

Bows by Kassai

Magyar and Mongol horse bows. Various weights, some low enough to be legal for war shooting.
Cascade Archery
Expensive, but nice. But they don't list draw weights.
Black Widow Bows

Bows Online

Reseller for Martin and Stotler bows

Harrelson Traditional Archery

Marriah Bows

    Custom work only.

JAPANESE BOWS

People sometimes ask why so-and-so isn't on the list. If you know of a supplier that isn't listed here, it may have been omitted for a variety of reasons:

  • I've checked the site, and found out that they are wholesalers only. This is why you don't see Browning or PSE here -- they sell only through retail outlets.
  • I've checked the site, and they make only modern compound bows that are not legal for SCA use. This is why Bear is not listed.
  • I've checked the site and the only recurves or longbows I found were in draw weights too heavy for SCA combat use. This is why Pearson and Cabela's are not listed.
  • I had the URL for their web site, but could not connect for some reason.
  • Nobody told me about it.

If you know of a place that sells bows we can use for combat, by all means please let me know.
