WAR STORIES
Ritter Deitrich's Taunt
For sheer audacity, and for the ability to fire up an entire army, it would take much to top Ritter Deitrich's geste before the second field battle in Gulf War VII. Thus it happened:
The army of Ansteorra reformed near the top of the slope at the north end of the battlefield, with a somewhat somber air. The first fight of the day had not gone well for the warriors of the Dark Star; starting with great vigor they had rushed uphill against the foe, only to be stopped by a hold just before the charge meant to split the Trimaran line came into contact. Deprived of momentum, the surge uphill was stopped, and the Ansteorran line, somewhat disarrayed by the rapid advance, was divided, and despite strenuous fighting was eventually split into smaller units, which were fianlly outflanked and overwhelmed. So it was with heavier hearts that the Ansteorran army redrew its line and lifted its weapons. When the array moved downhill it did so with less enthusiasm than before, until the lines were perhaps 50 yards apart.
It was then that the Kingdom Warlord, Ritter Deitrich, stepped out alone in front of the entire army, and called for archers. A small band of archers, led by Talon of Blackoak, followed into the clear space between the armies, and with their Warlord in the lead advanced toward the Trimaran line.
The small group stopped only 10 yards short of the foe, and began firing into the mass of the army opposing, felling a spear man and infuriating all until, galled beyond endurance, three Trimaran bravos broke ranks and charged. The archers then with permission consulted their safety, and fell back toward their own army while Ritter Dietrich covered them, moving backward to keep his face to the oncoming foes as he withdrew. Furiously the three warriors rushed upon their lone opponent, only to meet their dooms. First one, and then a second, lost a leg to the Warlord's sword, and fell writhing to the earth. The third recklessly pressed home his attack despite his comrades' fate, and despite his ferocity, was also in only seconds deprived of a limb, and then was sent crashing down by a mighty blow to the helm.
Great indeed was the shout then raised by the warriors of Ansteorra, and wondrous it was to see the entire army change after beholding that scene. Shields and weapons were lifted higher, voices were louder, and when the march downhill resumed it was with a step faster and firmer. So with the fires in their hearts restoked the fighters of the Dark Star advanced upon their foes, and soon inflicted upon Trimaris a stunning defeat.
As both armies had prevailed once in that day, the third fight was made without archers. That last battle lasted longer, and was more fiercely contested, than either that preceded it, but the fire in Ansteorran hearts still blazed, and for a second time the army of Ansteorra emerged victorious, and so won the field battle war point for the first time in years. Honor there was in plenty that day for all Ansteorrans, for without doubt every fighter upon that field strove at his utmost, but even greater honor to the Warlord who lifted the spirit of an entire army on his sword arm!
