The Word "Grandma" Means To Me...

by Nancy L. Dewey Slabosz

"Grandma" means warm sour cream cookies stored in a tin.
That were offered as soon as you walked in.
And if "Guiding Light" was your favorite show
Then you and Grandma were good to go!

"Grandma" means a cribbage player who knew no end.
In fact, an afternoon visit could lead to ten
P.M. that is.

"Grandma" means an imaginary tea party for three
with the wee little granddaughter, me.
And as Gram and Gramps would lick their lips
they'd say, "Boy that was delicious, what tasty tea!"

If you ever heard of an Eighty-Eight year old lady
who hand-sewn a wedding quilt in a year
then it had to be Grandma as you see,
she did that for me.

"Grandma" means, each Christmas you wait with great anticipation
to see this years latest creations.
The dishcloths and towels were always useful,
the pot holders and slippers were really quite cute.
But the multicolor dust mops left us nearly speechless!

And if you were ever in the mood for ten penny rummy,
Grandma was always ready.
But you may have heard her grumble
as she often ended up broke and humble.

But for all these memories that remind me of Grandma
my most precious is when the time came to head for home
you could always count on Grandma
to be holding her garage door opener armed and ready!

These memories are what the word "Grandma" means to me
and I will always remember them with love.
