Notes for SUSANNA CLARK:

The wife of Robert Elmer Johnson, Sr. died during a cholera epidemic while in England in 1849 or thereabouts. This account given by Robert Elmer Johnson, Jr.'s handwriting found in Robert Jr's Civil War Pension Records.

----------------------------------

"Cholera, the highly infectious and often fatal intestinal disease, appeared during the 19th century; the first outbreak occured 1831-33. It was introduced into the northeast ports from Russia; first appearing in

Sunderland. Further outbreaks occurred in 1848-49, 1854 and 1866. On each of these occasions the disease spread with alarming rapidity, largely because of the lack of sanitation in the new industrial towns. The outbreaks provided a spur to public health legislation, which in turn led to the eventual eradication of the disease." Contributed by Martin Edwards of Cambridgeshire Family History Society

Dated Dec. 3, 1993 to Hon. Commissioner of Pensions: Washington D.C.

"Dear Sir and Comrade:

When I were mustered into U.S. Service Aug 20, 1861, I lacked 4 Mon and 11 days of being 21 yrs of age. It was a foolish act, in applying for Pension the mistake to the best of my knowledge was corrected. My Father immigrated to America in 1845 or thereabouts with intentions of earning money to send for my Mother and six children. Later on my oldest bro. & sister came to America separately with other families. During the Cholera epidemic in the mother country in 1849, Mother died whilst caring for others afflicted with the disease. If we had a parish record it was lost after her demise. It is utterly impossible for me to furnish a public, or baptismal record of my birth. Being youngest of children can give age from memory only, as stated to me by my Father, 2 brothers, and 3 sisters. Namely January 1, 1841 as date of my birth. If you wish to inquire of parties here as to my veracity, I will refer you to C.C. Duncan, Pres. of our Bank, C.E. Stuart, Cashier, or our P.Master, Ramsey Arthur.

Fraternally Yours, Robert E. Johnson"

Dated April 18, 1916

" Hon Commissioner of Pensions, Sir

I lived with my Father, Robert Johnson, eldest Brother Joseph and his wife Elizabeth during the summer of 1860. Post Office Flowerfield, County St Joseph, Mich. Our home, West, 2 1/2 miles, North 1/4 mile from south edge of village.

During the summer of 1850, I lived in England. During Oct 1851-we began our journey to America, taking passage from Liverpool to New York. We numbered 5 - a Brother, 2 Sisters, and a cousin. 3 boys, oldest about 18 yrs, the youngest myself. Name of vessel, "Star of the West." Our voyage was a long one, lacking 1 day of 5 weeks.

From New York City a night trip of about 4 hours on Hudson River, then by train to Dunkirk, N.Y. across Lake Erie, by steamboat to Detroit, from that city to Kalamazoo, Mich, which village we reached presumably about Dec 1st or 2nd 1851.

Respectfully Yours,

Robert E. Johnson , Late Co.C. 6th Mich H.A."

"Muskegon Area Packer Develops Machine To Pack and Sleeve Celery

A Muskegon area celery packer has developed a time and energy saving ramming machine for packing hearts and sleeving stalks in a tight film package. It is a pneumatically operated, semi-auto-matic machine operated by one person. Lewis Spoelman, who developed and built the machine, said that activiation of a switch produces a sequential cycle that lifts one bag from a wicket, places it over the jaws of a funnel, expands the funnel jaws and opens the bag. Then, he continued, the celery which has been placed in a nearly vertical channel above the funnel is forced into the bag by a padded ramming cylinder which retracts with the funnel jaws closing to complete the cycle. Mr. Spoelman said that he built the machine in response to the need to save labor on the packingline. Its use increases the speed of the line by about 30 percent, he added. The prototype model was completed last February followed by the construction of three other machines which have been sold. Mr. Spoelman said that he now has orders from Florida for four other machines. Further information about the machine can be obtained from Mr. Spoelman whose address is..."
