The 5 biggest questions for the season

1) Will Hakeem Olajuwon be healthy enough to contribute? The All-Star center started only 28 games for the Rockets last year because of a hernia and a respiratory illness. It's difficult to imagine that the 36-year-old has much left in the tank.

2) If Olajuwon can play, will he be able to keep up with the youngsters running the court, namely Steve Francis (age 22), Shandon Anderson (26) and Cuttino Mobley (26)?

3) Can free-agent acquisition Maurice Taylor fill the rather large shoes of the retired Charles Barkley at power forward and help get the Rockets back to the playoffs?

4) After being persuaded to return to Houston rather than sign with Toronto, Mobley still has to share shooting guard duties with Anderson. Will Rudy T be able to keep both off-guards on?

5) Another challenge for the head coach will be getting his offensive-minded youngsters to play defense (Houston allowed an average of 100.3 points per game last season). Can the Rockets hold their opponents below 100 points a game this year?

The key to Houston's season will be the play of its big men. The guards have proved they can hold their own; it's up to the frontcourt to make the difference defensively. If Olajuwon, Taylor and the small forward tandem of Walt Williams and Matt Bullard can turn up the defensive pressure in addition to contributing 40 points a game, the Rockets could be playing in May.

Biggest Offseason Move: In an effort to get their frontcourt up to speed with their backcourt, the Rockets signed Taylor to a one-year contract for the mid-level exception of $2.5 million.

Circle the Date: On Nov. 28 and again on Dec. 8, the Rockets meet up with the Kings, a young, up-tempo team that was the eighth seed in the Western Conference playoffs last season. Houston will have a chance to serve notice that Sacramento may have to watch its back this year.

Standout Stat: 16.6 Number of turnovers Houston averaged per game last season. For all their outstanding guard play, the Rockets were sixth from the bottom of the league in turning the ball over.

STARTING FIVE

PG Steve Francis, 6-3, second season : A bigger, stronger version of last year's co-Rookie of the Year. Francis (think of a bigger, better-shooting Kevin Johnson) has worked on his defense and his mid-range jumper to where both are very good. Francis has assumed the role of leader, and his teammates are perfectly willing to follow.

SG Shandon Anderson, 6-6, fifth season: Better than people think, but has off games because his teammates sometimes fail to pay attention to his smooth off-the-ball game. A solid, physical defender and decent rebounder, Anderson needs only to improve his jump shot to be considered among the West's better off-guards.

C Hakeem Olajuwon, 7-0, 17th season: A strained ankle ligament has kept him out of the lineup until opening night (the Rockets hope); Olajuwon was performing adequately in the revamped system. Olajuwon has evidenced none of the bronchial spasms that impacted his breathing last year. His shot blocking and a surgical application of his offense should help the Rockets considerably.

PF Maurice Taylor, 6-9, fourth season: Still out with a broken ring finger on his right hand, but Taylor figures to give the Rockets some offensive punch in a spot where they sorely needed it. If he can rebound and play a little defense on the West's upper-echelon power forwards, the Rockets will be better than some think.

SF Walt Williams, 6-8, ninth season: Still able to knock down the outside shot, especially the 3-pointer. Williams is a valuable spot shooter in the Rockets' system. He's still got some creativity left in the passing department, as guys like Kelvin Cato have found out.

RESERVES

SG Cuttino Mobley, 6-4, third season: Another player who could be the whole package once he gets more experience. Mobley is a player who still runs on emotion, which makes him prone to flights of one-on-one basketball when he gets into an ego war with another player, but a tremendous sparkplug off the bench as the sixth man.

C Kelvin Cato, 6-11, fourth season: Has shown flashes in the preseason, but everyone is holding their breath to see if Cato can sustain any kind of consistent play over the course of a whole season. Could be a very good defender inside, especially with his shot blocking, but has to curb his penchant for yakking at the refs.

PG Moochie Norris, 6-1, fourth season: Mr. Consistent. Never seems to have an off game. If his shot's not falling, Norris will simply take it to the basket and make things happen that way. A bit overmatched at times on defense, but still a valuable addition out of the CBA.

PF Kenny Thomas, 6-7, second season: Is starting right now, but will return to the bench once Taylor gets back. Has an amazing drop-step move that allows him to score over much-bigger players, and is able to overpower guys his size. Still overmatched on defense, but getting better.

SF Matt Bullard, 6-10, 10th season: How does this guy last this long? Simple -- he can shoot. In a league that has fewer and fewer shooters, Bullard has one of the purest strokes, especially from the arc.

C Jason Collier, 7-0, rookie: He can shoot a little, but will not remind anyone of Bill Russell on the other side of the floor. Got eaten alive by David Robinson the first time he matched up against the Spurs, but Collier seems eager to learn.

SF Dan Langhi, 6-11, rookie: Another shooter, but has a good off-the dribble game and has a mean streak in him. Can't defend on the NBA level yet, but will learn.

PF Carlos Rogers, 6-11, seventh season: Has shone in Taylor's absence, but hard to see him fitting in because of his 'tweener size. Isn't strong enough to stop big guys, and isn't quick enough to check smaller forwards. Another yakker who will probably make the injured list with a strained jaw.
