The Outlaw Fuel Altered Association thundered into Dallas Raceway in Crandall, Texas for their second event of the 2010 season on Saturday, May 8th. Bobby Marriott took home the first win of the season over Donnie Massey in the final at North Star Dragway in April and Marriott came into this event as the defending event champion, so all eyes were on team “Shockwave” as sixteen ground shaking fuel altereds paired up for the opening session of qualifying.

(Chris Trussell)
John Broussard made the first strong run of the session with a 4.12 at 158 mph in the “Purple Haze” Louisiana based ride. Aaron Leyda and team “Hemi Hunter” owned and tuned by Dale Wilkens of Independence, Kansas put down a solid 4.28 at 165 mph to claim an early spot in the top half. Terry Anglin tied his career best 4.06 in the “Psychotic Express” machine and David Purifoy clicked off a nice 4.10 in the “Thrill Factor” car owned by Herb Whisnant of Texarkana, Texas. Bobby Marriott wheeled the “Shockwave” to a 4.00 at 174 mph but the team of Wood & Poloson stole the round with their first ever three second pass with a 3.99 at 174 mph. The “Sundown” machine became the 12th member of the OFAA 3 Second Club as fellow racers and fans cheered on the crew as they headed for the top end. Ricky Marshall made his OFAA debut behind the controls of “Power Play Jr” owned by Rich Howell. Marshall clicked off a 4.44 at 157 to claim a spot in the top ten with one session remaining. Chris Trussell claimed the ninth spot after first session with a 4.45 at 164 mph and Keith Anglin rounded out the top ten with his best pass in the brand new “Texas Gold Rush” machine with a 4.56 at 162 mph. Jack Hodgson as well as the team of Demets & Hale ran into mechanical issues while warming-up and were forced to load up early, leaving fourteen cars to battle for the win.

The second session brought some more great passes to the table as David Purifoy clicked off a career best 4.04 at 174 mph to claim the fourth qualifying position. Donny McSwain lined up and blasted to a stout career best 3.88 at 184 mph to set low elapsed time of the session. Bobby Marriott stepped up to a 3.97 at 176 mph and Mary Reep also jumped up into the top half of the field with a 4.07 at 181 mph, but bumped out Howard Knowles who made the two from Carthage, Missouri. Knowles, with crew chief and wife Melody, clicked off a 4.51 at 158 mph which fell short of the 4.45 bump spot held by Chris Trussell. DoDad Burton, Keith Anglin and Anthony Whitfield also were outside looking in after the final qualifying session. Back in the pits, John Broussard and Mary Reep were both forced to park their cars early due to parts failure which ironically bumped back in Howard Knowles and DoDad Burton. The pairings were set and the call went out for first round of eliminations, where the two quickest winners would advance straight to the final round.

Ricky Marshall and Terry Anglin got eliminations started as Anglin left first and blasted to a strong 4.07 at 176 mph to take the win. In the other lane, Ricky Marshall was on a clean strong run and clicked off a 4.45 @ 156 mph, but things got wild at the top end as Marshall suddenly veered left and tagged the wall hard shooting sparks into the sky as immediately the “Power Play Jr” team and Dallas Raceway medical and track staff raced to the scene.
(Ricky Marshall - Power Play Jr.)
“I really don't know what happened. The wall jumped out in front of me and we think something may have broken on the car during the run. T fuel was shut off and I was coasting then car made a hard left turn and I had no steering to correct it. The car was hurt but not destroyed; it will need a front half. I want to thank all the people that helped us on the scene, the Dallas Raceway safety crew for being on the spot, and my crew for their hard work. I'm okay, the car is ok, but my pride is a little hurt,” said Marshall.
Racing resumed with a high level of intensity after Marshall’s incident as Chris Trussell and Donny McSwain paired up to do battle. Trussell went red with a -.238 rt knowing he needed a starting line advantage to beat McSwain heads up. McSwain left hard and immediately drifted to the centerline from the right lane. Trussell was still under power in the left lane as McSwain fought to keep the “II N’Tense” machine under control. Finally, McSwain aborted the run crossing into the left lane just behind Trussell, narrowly missing both Trussell and the cones. This gave the round win back to Trussell since McSwain committed the “worse” foul by crossing the center stripe.

No one knew what to expect next as the round continued with Howard Knowles lining up with Bobby Marriott. Knowles got a huge advantage off the line but ran into issues and was forced to lift while Marriott was on and off the throttle fighting to keep the “Shockwave” in the groove but got the win with a 4.46 at 125 mph. Aaron Leyda and David Purifoy rolled out next with Leyda taking the advantage off the line and getting the win with a 4.31 at 165 mph over Purifoy, who also crossed the centerline on a 6.28 at 69 mph. Anglin and Leyda were set to advance to the final with one pair remaining, DoDad Burton vs. Nick Poloson. Poloson was out of the gate first and never looked back taking the win with a 4.16, which advanced him in the final round to face Terry Anglin.

This was Terry Anglin’s second trip to an OFAA final round where he looked to claim his second OFAA win, in his second year with the series. Poloson was making his third career trip to the final round and a win would put icing on the cake after the team ran their career best first three second pass (3.99) in qualifying.
(Nick Poloson - Sundown)
The temperature had dropped considerably after sunset and the conditions were less than ideal as the teams pulled their cars into the beams in the last race of the night. Anglin got a slight advantage off the line and led by four hundredths to the 330’ cone. Just past half track the “Sundown” machine of Poloson broke loose and headed for the wall, forcing him to lift and watch as Anglin streaked away for the win with his best pass of the night, 4.05 at 175 mph, a career best elapsed time.

“We had great night of racing; the Psychotic Express was on a roll and worked perfectly all night, as did our entire team. I want to give a big thanks to my crew chief Denny McWhorter and team members Brad Vanover and Josh Liles. I know it was a tough track to get down for some teams; our team car “Texas Gold Rush” experienced some of the issues as well. Good job of driving to Ricky Marshall and the “Power Play Jr” as we hope all is ok. Also to Nick Poloson who kept his ride on his side in the final just like I asked him to before we ran. Thanks to all the OFAA members for putting on a great show as always,” said Anglin.

The team of Poloson & Wood didn’t get their icing but still took home some cake after notching a spot in the OFAA 3 Second Club. “It was another fantastic weekend for the Sundown team! Our first run in the three second zone and a runner-up finish ain’t bad! One of the great things about the Outlaw Fuel Altered organization is that after we ran our 3.99, every single team came over and congratulated us on the achievement. What a fantastic group of people! In the final, on a very cold and tricky racetrack, I had a good run going until half-track, where a good run turned in to a circus act, and as I tried to land back on all four tires, I saw Terry whistle by me for the win. Congratulations to Terry and the entire Psychotic Express crew,” said Poloson.
