The Painless Performance Outlaw Fuel Altered Association thundered into San Antonio Raceway on the second half of back to back weekends for the series. The Texas Timing Association hosted the “Texas Nitro Nostalgia” event and the OFAA headlined the show, with fourteen cars on the property battling for a spot in the quick twelve field. The heat was on both the teams and the track itself as the sun beat down with temperatures in the high 90’s as the first qualifying session got started.

First Qualifying Session:

(Jimmy Jones)

Jimmy Jones, winner at last weekend’s event at Texas Raceway, rolled out first to start the qualifying round along side Roger Hennen. Jones blasted straight down the eighth mile to a solid 3.99 at 156 mph to Hennen’s 4.60 at 161 mph.

As the session continued, a pair of nitro burners were brought to life as Howard Farris laid down a 4.15 in his “War Wagon” entry just behind Chris Trussell who posted a 4.05 in the “Assassin” machine.

(John Broussard)

Nick Poloson wheeled the hometown Tom Wood tuned “Sundown” entry to a nice 4.04 at 176 mph along side John Broussard who posted a 4.10 at 172 in the “Purple Haze” ride. Mary Reep showed the boys she was ready to play for keeps with a 4.00 at 181 mph in the “Grim Reeper”.

(Aaron Leyda)

Aaron Leyda clicked off a nice 4.12 at 174 mph in the “Hemi Hunter” machine to secure a spot in the show on his opening lap. A few teams struggled in the heat and were off pace in the opening session, leaving them just one more qualifying round to earn their spot in the show, as the teams returned to the pits.

Second Qualifying Session:

The quick twelve bump spot heading into the final session was Terry Brian’s 6.36 which was quickly tossed aside by Brian himself, who clicked off a clean 4.01 at 183 mph to claim the “II N’Tense” team a spot in the top half of the field.

The bump was now at Roger Hennen’s 4.60 as qualifying continued. John Broussard posted a 4.09 at 168 mph, his second strong lap of the day, as DoDad Burton stepped up to a 4.29 at 165 in the “Free Spirit” entry to qualify number ten.

(DoDad Burton)

(Roger Hennen)

Bobby Marriott improved to a 4.08 at 181 mph in the nitro burning “Shockwave” entry, good for the number three spot while Roger Hennen posted another 4.60 in the "Nitro Junkie" to remain on the bump as the session continued. Despite running a career best 4.32 in testing Friday night, Mike Wheeler ran into convertor issues and missed the show in the “Rapture” blown altered.

(Mike Wheeler)

Aaron Leyda repeated his effort with another 4.12 while Raymond Dawson came up just short with a best of 4.72 at 166 mph in the “High Octane” entry. Donnie Massey improved to a 4.19 at 171 mph in “Showtime” to secure the number nine spot and Mary Reep clicked off low elapsed time of the session with a stout 3.92 at 183 mph.

(Raymond Dawson)

Back in the pits, Roger Hennen and team “Nitro Junkie” ran into a mechanical issue and opted to sit-out the first round of eliminations, inserting Raymond Dawson into the quick twelve field as the pairings were set and crews began making their final tuning adjustments. Jimmy Jones’ “Texas Tremor” team led the field with a corrected 4.003 narrowly out qualifying Mary Reep’s 4.005, to take his first pole of the season.

Final Qualifying Order:

1) Jimmy Jones (Cleburne, Texas) – (3.997) 4.003 @ 156
2) Mary Reep (Austin, Texas) – 4.005 @ 183
3) Terry Brian (New London, Texas) – 4.01 @ 183
4) Nick Poloson (San Antonio, Texas) – 4.04 @ 176
5) Chris Trussell (Canton, Texas) – 4.05 @ 180
6) Bobby Marriott (Pilot Point, Texas) – 4.08 @ 181
7) John Broussard (Lake Charles, Louisiana) – 4.09 @ 168
8) Aaron Leyda (Bartlesville, Oklahoma) – 4.12 @ 176
9) Howard Farris (Tyler, Texas) – 4.15 @ 171
10) Donnie Massey (Little Elm, Texas) – 4.19 @ 171
11) DoDad Burton (Tyler, Texas) – 4.29 @ 165
12) Roger Hennen (Denton, Texas) – 4.60 @ 167

13) Raymond Dawson (Nevada, Texas) – 4.72 @ 166
14) Mike Wheeler (Paradise, Texas) – 14.14 @ 25

A great side by side pairing opened the first round of eliminations with Nick Poloson squaring off with Donnie Massey, a blown alcohol wedge lining up against a blown nitro hemi. Poloson looking to show well at his hometown event and continue his first round winning streak, while Massey was looking for his first round of the season. Poloson was off the line first and never trailed in this one, posting a 4.06 at 175 mph to knock out Massey’s close 4.09 at 182 mph.

(Nick Poloson)

Mary Reep took a wild first round win in a single run after Aaron Leyda’s car wouldn’t fire up for their first round pairing. Reep left before the tree was activated and hiked the front end carrying the wheels until she almost crossed the centerline, but got no time on the run, earning first round winning points but no chance of a re-peat final round appearance after her strong qualifying effort here and runner-up finish last weekend at Texas Raceway.

(Mary Reep)

Bobby Marriott was set to line-up with Raymond Dawson but Dawson’s car would not fire in the water box, so Marriott was awarded the single and went straight down the track to a 4.10 at 178 mph to take the round win for team “Shockwave”.

(Bobby Marriott)

Terry Brian and Howard Farris were out next in another great side by side race. Brian’s alcohol burning machine got the jump off the line and posted a strong 3.96 at 178 mph to take out Farris’ career best 4.04 at 170 mph. Back to back solid outings for the “War Wagon” team and Farris, while Brian was hoping his 3.96 would last as one of the two quickest winning times and advance him to his second final of the season.

(Terry Brian)

Jimmy Jones and John Broussard squared off next, both with an OFAA win this season, in a powerhouse blown alcohol match-up. Broussard was off the line first by a slim margin and posted his best run of the event with a 4.05 at 175 mph but came up just short at the stripe, as Jones blasted to a 3.98 at 182 mph to take the round win in a close drag race.

Jones’ 3.98 and Brian’s 3.96 were the final round tickets with one pair remaining in the first round of eliminations. Chris Trussell and DoDad Burton did their burnouts and crept into the staging beams. Burton took a slight advantage off the line but Trussell quickly closed the gap, posting a winning 4.00 at 183 mph to take out Burton’s 4.32 at 164 mph.

(Chris Trussell)

Trussell almost crept into the final but his 4.00 wasn’t quite enough, as Jimmy Jones and Terry Brian were headed into the final round at San Antonio, Jones looking for back to back wins while Brian was hoping to notch his first win of the season.

First Round Eliminations:

(W) Nick Poloson (.049 rt) 4.06 @ 175 vs. (L) Donnie (.078 rt) 4.09 @ 182
(W) Mary Reep (No Time) vs. (L) Aaron Leyda (Broke)
(W) Bobby Marriott (.388 rt) 4.10 @ 178 vs. (L) Raymond Dawson (Broke)
(W) Terry Brian (.068 rt) 3.96 @ 178 vs. (L) Howard Farris (.130 rt) 4.04 @ 170
(W) Jimmy Jones (.045 rt) 3.98 @ 182 vs. (L) John Broussard (.026 rt) 4.05 @ 175
(W) Chris Trussell (.138 rt) 4.00 @ 183 vs. (L) DoDad Burton (.123 rt) 4.32 @ 164

The OFAA final round was the last side by side race of the night in San Antonio, after a full day of nostalgia drag racing action it was time to decide a winner as Jones and Brian did their burnouts and crept into the beams.

Jones left first with a slight advantage and the cars were side by side as they passed the 330’ cone, a split second later Jones lifted and Brian blasted across the finish line to his best pass of the season so far, a stout 3.92 at 184 mph to take the win for team “II N’Tense” and crew chief Kenny Trumble.

(Jimmy Jones vs. Terry Brian)

Jones’ car blew an air line and wouldn’t shift into high gear forcing him to lift and coast to a 4.38 at 124 mph, in what would have been a spectacular side by side three second final round. Regardless, an almost flawless event for Terry Brian paid off with the big win and catapulted him into the points lead.

Final Round Results:

(W) Terry Brian (.083 rt) 3.92 @ 184 vs. (L) Jimmy Jones (.058) 4.38 @ 124
