Qualifying Highlights:

(Nick Poloson)

Due to abnormally long track down time, the OFAA was held to only one qualifying session. Nick Poloson and the Tom Wood tuned "Sundown" nitro burning entry claimed the top qualifying spot with a 4.00. Poloson was entering the event as the defending Champion from last year and looking for a repeat win in Louisiana. Ken Singleton's Oklahoma based "High Risk" scored the second spot with a 4.02 and Raymond Dawson's "High Octane" landed in the number three spot with a 4.04 elapsed time. Mary Reep's "Grim Reeper" from Austin, Texas suffered massive engine damage on her qualifying pass which ended their race day earlier than expected and with ten cars left, pairings were set and it was time to line up for first round eliminations.

(Eric Buchanan)

Eliminations:

Nick Poloson and Donnie Massey kicked off the first round in a battle of heavy hitting nitro burners as Poloson took a huge starting line advantage and never trailed, taking the win with a 3.88 at 191 mph to Massey's 3.96 at 183 mph. Eric Buchanan was out next in Terry Darby's "Nitro Relapse" against Clint Cross in the Allen Meyer tuned "Crossways". Cross was forced to shutoff after the burnout leaving Buchanan on a single as he clicked off a 3.87 at 187 to take the win. The pace was hot and heavy to start off the round as it now took better than a 3.88 to earn a spot in the final round and only two pair had run down the track. The two quickest winners from this round would advance to the final.

(Mark Hunter)

As first round continued, points leader Donny McSwain and Mark Hunter crept into the stage beams. McSwain had this one from start to finish as his 3.89 at 183 took the win, but came up just short of a ticket to the final round. Louisiana based John Broussard in the "Purple Haze" fired up next alongside Ken Singleton. Broussard took the advantage off the line and he needed it as his 4.12 at 170 mph held off a quicker but losing 4.11 at 162 from Singleton. In the final pair, Mark Bowman's "Blown Income" and Raymond Dawson's "High Octane" came to the line. Bowman scored the round win with a clean 4.01 at 180 mph to Dawson's off pace 4.31 at 141 mph as Eric Buchanan and Nick Poloson moved into the final round in Shreveport.

Late into the night the final round was on as a pair of fire breathing nitro methane fueled machines came to life under the lights at Thunder Road Raceway Park. Poloson and Buchanan were given the signal to pull into the beams after a final check over from their crew chiefs. At the hit of the throttle, Poloson was off the line first and the cars charged header flames high side by side through the eighth mile. At the stripe, the win went to Poloson with a 3.81 at 189 to Buchanan's close 3.86 at 190 mph.
