Notch North Star Dragway Victories
North Star Dragway - Denton, TX - Oct 4, 2014
The Southwest Heritage Racing Association presented by MalloryPrint.com brought a fleet of old school drag racing machines through the gates of North Star Dragway in Denton, Texas for their annual Fall Nostalgia Nationals event. This seventh event of the 2014 SHRA racing season marked the final event for Nostalgia Eliminator teams to earn points in their NE Shootout program. This event also would play a critical role in the SHRA Championship chase this season, especially in the bracket classes and heated Nostalgia Eliminator 2 points chase.
The weather could not have been better as a day filled with temperatures in the low 80's and beautiful blue skies welcomed a capacity crowd to Denton, Texas with stands full of eager fans and racecars overflowing into the top end of the facility. Racing got underway at 3 p.m. with the first of two time trails for all five SHRA classes.
Nostalgia Eliminator 1 Results:
(Dale McKee)
(Andy Mears)
In the 4.65 index Nostalgia Eliminator 1 Steve Dunkin wheeled his "Foolish Pleasure" blown slingshot dragster to the top spot with a "perfect" 4.65 at 151 mph to lead the field of thirteen into eliminations. Dale McKee nailed down his best qualifying effort of the season in second with a 4.66 at 157 mph and Clay Cunningham rounded out the top three in his beautiful blown Fiat with a 4.69 at 156 mph. After two rounds of eliminations, Steve Dunkin and Gary Ballard were paired up in the first match of the semi-final round. Dunkin used a holeshot and 4.81 at 143 mph to take out Ballard's quicker 4.79 at 146 mph as Dunkin moved into his second final round of the season to take on the winner between Andy Mears and Dale McKee. Mears also used a holeshot to advance to his first SHRA final of the season as his 4.79 at 130 mph held off McKee's quicker 4.75 at 138 mph.
(Gary Ballard)
(Steve Dunkin)
In the final of Nostalgia Eliminator 1, Steve Dunkin took the starting line advantage and never trailed but at the stripe he broke out with a 4.59 at 152 mph as Andy Mears' "Dragon Slayer" team celebrated their first career SHRA event victory with a 4.74 at 149 mph pass. The stunning 1957 Chevy blown alcohol funny car made its way to the winners circle and it was all smiles at the Mears camp in Denton. In the Good Vibrations Motorsports NE 1 Shootout standings, Clay Cunningham, Gary Ballard and Ron Muncy all secured their spot in the field with Tera W. Graves leading the ladder into the SHRA Finals November 8th at the Texas Motorplex in Ennis. Tera W. Graves also has a healthy lead over husband Chris Graves in the NE 1 points standings and looks to lock up the NE 1 class Championship at the Motorplex.

Nostalgia Eliminator 2 Results:
In the 5.00 index Nostalgia Eliminator 2 class, Bruce Dodson wheeled his altered to the top spot with a nice 5.02 at 139 mph, his second top qualifier this season. Steven Hansen, in his first SHRA appearance in his injected altered, qualified number two with a 5.03 at 139 and Don Holley rounded out the top three qualifiers with a 5.06 at 138 mph. Semi-final round action brought defending series Champion Bee Godwin to the line to take on Steven Hansen in the first pair. Godwin took the advantage at the start and he needed it as his 5.12 at 139 mph defeated Hansen's quicker but loosing 5.10 at 139 mph. Ardmore winner Thomas Hixson was out next alongside top qualifier Bruce Dodson to see who would battle Godwin in the final. Yet again this one was decided on the starting line as Hixson left first and posted a 5.05 at 139 mph to take out Dodson's quicker but loosing 5.01 at 140 mph.
(Bruce Dodson)
(Stephen Hansen)
(Thomas Hixson)
In the final of Nostalgia Eliminator 2, two veterans Bee Godwin and Thomas Hixson brought their front engine dragsters to life and after their burnouts came to the line ready to crown a winner. Hixson was ready for action and his .001 reaction time coupled with a 5.03 at 140 mph sealed his second straight NE 2 win over Godwin's very close and almost identical 5.03 at 140 mph. Congratulations to the "One Wild Ride" team of Hixson who would like to thank Red Truck Promos and FDT's for their support of the team this season. Godwin gained enough points with his runner-up finish to re-claim his points lead over Tommy Drozd who went out in round one. Just fourteen points separate the two heading into the SHRA Finals at the Texas Motorplex. Tommy Drozd did secure the lead in the Meyer Enterprises NE 2 Shootout field heading into Ennis on November 8th.

Nostalgia Eliminator 3 Results:
In the 5.50 index Nostalgia Eliminator 3 class, Gary Mitchell clicked off a "perfect" 5.50 at 124 mph to qualify his "Makin' Magic" altered in the top spot for the first time this season. Ron Walden, Robert Springstead and points leader Dusty Rose all posted 5.51 elapsed times in this close field with Carl Johnson rounding out the seven car field. In semi-final round action, Josh Moseley was set to do battle with defending series Champion Doug Morrison. Moseley, in his first SHRA appearance in his altered, advanced to the finals with a 5.57 at 125 mph as Morrison broke out by .0003 of a second with a 5.4997 at 118 mph. Dusty Rose and Gary Mitchell continued their friendly rivalry in the final pair of the semi-finals. Rose took the advantage at the starting line and his 5.56 at 117 mph took the nod over Mitchell's quicker 5.55 at 124 mph as Rose moved into his impressive sixth final round of the year to take on the new comer Moseley.
(Gary Mitchell)
(Josh Moseley)
(Dusty Rose)
In the final, Moseley was off the line first and his 5.56 at 125 mph held off Rose' quicker 5.54 at 115 mph as Moseley notched his first career SHRA win in his first appearance with the series. Rose had to settle for runner-up in Denton, but will lead the AlkyDigger.com NE 3 Shootout field into that eliminator at the Motorplex in November and is a sure bet to lock up the NE 3 class Championship by simply pulling through the gate in Ennis next month.

Old School No-Electronics Results:
In the Old School No Electronics bracket class, twenty cars entered the field with Jim Baughan and his 1937 Chevy Coupe leading the points standings. Joe Elmore, Stephen Foster, Brad Thompson and John Wilson rounded out the top five entering Denton. Rounds were critical here with just two events remaining to decide a Champion for the 2014 season. In a shocker, Jim Baughan bowed out in round one to Larry Nelson. Brad Thompson also fell in first round against Bill Hampton. Stephen Foster and Joe Elmore missed this event, which opened the door wide open for John Wilson and others to make a big move to the top.
(John Wilson)
(Chris Jarvis)
In the semi-finals of Old School No Electronics, none other than John Wilson came to the line in his 1967 Camaro lined up with Tim Kirby, also wheeling a 1967 Camaro. Kirby ended his day at the starting line with a -.076 reaction time as Wilson moved to his first SHRA final round. Wilson would take on the strong running Chris Jarvis in his flamed 1967 Camaro, who took the bye run and went dead on with a 6.1600 on a 6.16 and appeared to have the momentum heading into the last dance. In the final, Wilson took a massive starting line advantage but his 6.50 at 109 mph broke out on his 6.54 dial, while Jarvis clicked off a 6.17 at 115 mph on a 6.16 dial to claim his second career SHRA event win. Jarvis catapulted himself into the Championship hunt and sits in third place behind John Wilson and Jim Baughan with only twenty one points separating the three heading into the SHRA Finals at the Motorplex. Congratulations to both finalists on a great day in Denton. We look forward to seeing this Championship battle settled next month!

Old School Electronics Results:
In the Old School Electronics bracket class, twenty three machines entered competition with another great points battle going down. Russell Cook entered the event leading the standings with Dean Johnson, Bobby Taylor, Jim Baughan and T.J. Clements rounding out the top five. Both Cook and Johnson bowed out in round two which again opened the door for their competitors to make a move to the contending positions in the Championship battle. Bobby Taylor was defeated by Ardmore runner up Rhonda Treitsch in the third round and Jim Baughan, who defeated Dean Johnson in round two, was knocked out by Alex Garca in third round.
(David Kopp)
(Rhonda Trietsch)
In the semi-finals of Old School Electronics, first time SHRA participant David Kopp brought his 1968 Camaro to the line set to race first time SHRA semi-finalist Alex Garca in his 1977 Chevy Monza. Garca laid down a 6.925 on his 6.95 dial but Kopp took the win light with a .005 reaction time coupled with a 5.631 on a 5.63 dial at 115 mph. Kopp was moving into his first career SHRA final and would face Rhonda Trietsch in her 1967 Camaro who benefitted from the bye run and was in her second straight class final. In the final, Trietsch cut a stellar .005 light and her 5.67 at 124 mph on a 5.65 dial held off Kopp's 5.60 which broke out on his 5.63 dial. Rhonda Trietsch claimed her first SHRA event win after posting a strong runner-up finish at the last event in Ardmore. Trietsch climbed to the fourth position in points atop Jim Baughan who dropped to fifth, but it still in title contention. Russell Cook still holds the lead in the standings but it's a slim one over Dean Johnson, Bobby Taylor, Trietsch and Baughan with only twenty eight points separating the top four. This will be yet another intense class to watch as the top contenders battle for the 2014 SHRA class Championship.
