Welcome! This page is dedicated to my Dad

IITimothy 4:7 "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith."

My Dad was diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer the end of Dec. 1997. He battled the cancer with 8 weeks of chemo and 7 weeks of radiation. Two days after the final radiation treatment he contracted pneumonia and entered the hospital on May 15. After 10 long days of suffering and treatment his heart and lungs could fight no more. At about 8:15 p.m. on the 24th he suffered a major heart attack and through the efforts of the hospital staff was brought back to us. Thankfully, my sister and I were able to get to the hospital and spend his final 12 hours by his side. At about 10:15 a.m. on the 25th he suffered a second heart attack and passed from this life with all its pain and sorrows to the beautiful paradise we are promised. Though we miss him greatly and are very sorrowed by his passing we know that he is now at peace and will never suffer again.

We will never know for certain what the status of the cancer was at the time of his passing because his lungs were too full of pnuemonia for the Drs. to be able to get a good view of the tumor, however, the general feeling was that the cancer was not causing the problems but the pneumonia. The weakened condition of the lungs due to the radiation probably contributed greatly to the pneumonia.

My Dad smoked for some 30 years before finally quitting back in 1975. You might say then his cancer is not directly related to his smoking but that is not the case. Even after you quit your chances of developing lung cancer are still greater than if you had never smoked at all.

If you are reading this page and have a family member or friend who smokes please urge them to stop before it is too late. If you are reading this and smoke yourself, please stop. I can't say enough times that smoking is life threatening not only to the person who smokes but also for those around them. Children of smokers have many more ear infections and upper respitory infections than those of non smokers. I have so many respitory problems myself that I am sure are related to growing up in a smoke filled home.

If my Dad could talk to you today, he would urge you to throw away those cigarettes and never pick up another. He knew that the cancer he had was a result of the choices he made in his life. How he wished he could have gone back in time and chose differently.

I hope that by reading this page you will be touched in some positive way. It is my prayer that the links I have here will be of service to you and your's.

I have updated my link list to include several really good sites regarding lung cancer and its treatment options. If you have any that you think would be beneficial to others, please forward them to me and I will consider adding them to this page.

If you have visited this page before and were among the hundreds perhaps even thousands that were praying for my Dad and our family, we wish to take a moment to thank you. Though our prayers were not answered exactly like we wished, we know they were answered. After all, the cancer was at the very least shrinking which is what we were praying for. We just never imagined that he would be taken from us due to something else. We are grateful that his suffering was short and that he did not linger. We rest in the knowledge that Dad, as II Tim. 4:7-8 says, fought a good fight, finished his course, and kept the faith, henceforth there is laid up for him a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give him at that day, and not to him only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. We are also thankful that through his life others were touched and brought to Christ which was evident to us through the outpouring of love to us during our time of sorrow. I thank him for all that he taught me and my hope and prayer is that I can be the kind of example through my life that he was.
