Chapter 13

"What are you doing?" Isaac asked coldly, quietly getting up from his bed to go over to Karen, afraid he would wake his brothers. Karen pulled him into the hallway and started talking.

"I'm so sorry, Isaac. Losing you made me crazy. I really liked you, and then you left me, and it made me do stupid and insane things. I can see it in the way you look at Jamie that you really like her. I'm planning on apologizing to Jamie and the public in the morning. I just couldn't wait any longer to apologize to you. I'm really sorry."

Isaac stood in shock. This was not what he had expected from Karen, of all people! He graciously accepted her apology and let her follow him downstairs so she could go out the front door.

Meanwhile, in Jamie and Monica's room across the hall, Jamie lay awake in bed. The events of the night kept whirling through her mind, and every time she closed her eyes, all she saw was the car that almost ran her over. But more than that was the careful hug she had given Isaac.

A sudden commotion in the hallway brought her to her feet. She crept to the doorway, careful not to wake Monica, and peeked out the door. Isaac was leading someone down the stairs. Jamie glanced at her watch. It was 2 am. Who could possibly be leaving Hanson's house at that time of night? She just had to know.

Quietly, she followed the person down the stairs and hid.

"Thank you for coming and waking me up, Karen," she heard Isaac say.

Karen??? Jamie mouthed. Suddenly, she was standing in the living room in front of them. "Can't you just leave us alone, Karen? You've done enough damage already!" Jamie hissed.

"Jamie!" Isaac said, his face going white when he saw the look on her face. Even though it was dark, Isaac could see the angry light in Jamie's eyes.

"Jamie, it's not what you think..." Karen started helplessly.

"You guys back together, hmmm??" Jamie said, her voice getting louder. "And to think all this time that Isaac was the nice one!"

"Jamie, stop this!" Isaac demanded.

Monica sat straight up in bed. Something had woken her. She wasn't sure what, but when she glanced over to check on Jamie, her bed was empty. "Oh no..." Monica murmured. She got up, throwing the covers off her, and ran into the dark hallway, where she collided with someone.

"Moni, what are you doing up?" Taylor's voice came.

"Jamie's gone."

"I think I know where she is," Taylor whispered, grabbing Monica's hand and pulling her down the stairs. There was Jamie and Isaac, standing in the living room with someone else.

"Karen," Taylor and Monica both whispered.

"Jamie, calm down!" Isaac was saying. "Please, come on. You know this is not what it looks like!"

"Jamie, what's going on?" Monica asked.

"Ask him. They'll tell you their little game," Jamie hissed and ran back upstairs. Isaac ran his hand through his hair, looking very upset.

"You should leave, Karen, and don't come back until Jamie's got a handle on this situation," Isaac said.

Karen turned to leave, but said coldly over her shoulder, "I should have run her over."

Taylor's mouth dropped open. He saw Isaac narrow his eyes and start raising his hand. Taylor jumped and held Isaac back until the door was closed.

"I'll handle Jamie, okay?" Monica said. "She's just really scared right now. She didn't mean it."

"What was Karen doing anyways?" Taylor asked.

"Apologizing. I'm just going to bed. I need to sleep and think this over," Isaac said and went upstairs.

"I'll see you in the morning, Moni," Taylor said.

"I'll be here." Monica groaned inwardly at that comment. She thought it sounded stupid, but Taylor smiled back at her. Her heart skipped a beat as she went upstairs. "Jules?"

"Leave me alone," Jamie sobbed. "Just leave me alone."

Monica crawled back into her own bed, hoping she would wake up from this nightmare soon.

When Monica awoke the next morning, Jamie was sitting up in bed, staring out the window. "Jamie? What's going on?" Monica asked groggily.

"Can people apologize to each other in their dreams?" she asked, not taking her eyes from the window.

"I...uh...suppose. Why?"

Jamie turned to Monica. "Because I apologized to Isaac in my dreams last night...and he told me he loved me."

Monica sat up in shock. Whatever she had been expecting, it was certainly not this. "Do you...is it...are you sure it wasn't just a dream?" she stammered.

"I'm not sure of anything right now, Moni...except that I love him. I don't know how he feels, I don't know how Karen fits in the picture...but this I know. I love Clarke Isaac Hanson, and always will."

"What are you gonna do, Jules?"

Jamie stood up. "I need to go talk to Isaac. I have to know how he feels."

"Good luck," Monica called as Jamie left the room and headed downstairs.

Meanwhile, in the next room, a similar conversation was taking place.

"I had the strangest dream last night," Isaac yawned.

"Oh, really?" Taylor inquired.

"Yeah. I couldn't really see anything, but I heard a voice...Jamie's voice. She apologized for last night. Then...Taylor, I told her I loved her."

Taylor's mouth dropped open. "You...you told her you loved her? You really love her?"

Isaac smiled. "I really love her." Then his smile disappeared. "Oh, man...I just thought of something. What if she doesn't feel the same? What will I do?"

"Ike, I can't help you. Just tell her how you feel. Even if she doesn't feel the same, it's much better to let her know now, rather than waiting until you know she feels the same. By then, it might be too late."

"Yeah, you're right. I'll go talk to her right now." He left the room, nearly running into Jamie.

"Hi Ike," she said quietly.

"Good morning, Jamie," he replied. "Could I talk to you for a minute?"

"Sure," she said. "Actually, I wanted to talk to you, too."

Isaac hesitated. Finally, he decided to wait to hear what she had to say before telling her what he had to say. "Okay, go ahead."

Jamie paused. "I...I had a dream last night."

Taylor was watching the pair, making sure that they couldn't see him. When he heard Jamie say that she had had a dream, he was immediately suspicious. He did not believe that they could both have had the same dream, despite what his brother had told him. Unwillingly, his thoughts dragged him to Monica. She must have heard his conversation with Isaac that morning, and then told Jamie about it. Angrily, he burst into the room the girls had shared. "You little sneak!" he accused.

Monica looked up from where she was deep in thought. "Excuse me?" she said politely.

"Oh, don't even try that I'm-so-innocent act on me. I know you heard what we said this morning. I know you're still upset at Ike for what he did to Jamie, but that doesn't give you an excuse to eavesdrop on us, or to tell Jamie what we said so she could hurt him like he hurt her."

Monica was absolutely shocked and hurt by Taylor's accusations. She hadn't even left the room yet that morning. "Taylor," she said coldly, "just what gives you the right to accuse me of that? I haven't even left this room yet today. What makes you think I would even think of doing something like that?"

"Ike was telling me this morning about this dream he had...why am I even telling you this? You obviously already know about it. Anyway, then I follow him to see what happens, and I hear Jamie mention...what else but the exact same dream! Don't you think that's just a little strange?" he said sarcastically.

"Taylor, I didn't do anything. Jamie told me about a dream, too. She apologized to your brother, and he told her that he loved her. Then she said she had to find out if he really felt like that, or if it was just a dream. She left the room, and then you barged in." Monica was nearly crying by this time. Didn't Taylor like her? It's just my luck, she told herself. Just when I admit that I like someone, he doesn't like me anymore.

"Taylor!" Monica said. "Did you ever think that maybe Ike and Jamie did meet in their dreams because they couldn't bear to speak their true feelings in real life?"

Taylor started laughing, fueling Monica's anger even more. "That is so stupid, Monica. People don't meet in their dreams!"

Monica pushed Taylor to the doorway. "Get out, stay out and don't come crying to me when you find I'm right!" Monica slammed the door in Taylor's face, his laughter echoing through her ears.

Meanwhile, Jamie and Isaac were still standing face-to-face in the hallway when Taylor brushed past them. Jamie took one look at him and looked up at Isaac. "I should talk to Taylor. I have a feeling something just went wrong," Jamie murmured.

Isaac nodded, temporarily glad the dream wasn't being spoken of. He needed time to think about it some more. Jamie started walking away, but before she was out of sight, she came back to Isaac's side. "Go see if Monica's okay," she whispered to him. There was a pause where the two of them looked at each other, and then Jamie started to move away, but Isaac pulled her back.

"We do need to talk later, Jamie," he said quietly. She nodded and walked down the hallway, pausing outside Taylor's room to take a breath and clear her head. Quietly, she knocked on the door, and Taylor came to the door. She knew he was upset. He let her in and returned to his bed.

"Taylor, something's wrong," Jamie started. "Do you want to talk about it?"

"How could she do this to me?" Taylor murmured. "Ike told me about his dream....and seconds later, you came down the hall, saying something about a dream! I know Monica said something....how could she?"

Jamie sighed and sat down. "Taylor....Monica wouldn't lie to you. I did dream last night. Monica never told me anything. If anything, I told her."

Taylor looked up. "Really?" Jamie nodded. "Then I was wrong...oh man, I screwed up...."

"You have feelings for her," Jamie said. Taylor was surprised to hear the tone of Jamie's voice. It wasn't a question. She knew it was fact.

Down the hall, Isaac was spilling his guts to Monica, finding he knew he could trust in her even if Taylor couldn't. He wanted her opinion on what to do about Jamie.

"You two need to go somewhere quiet and talk this out. Now that Karen seems to be out of the picture, Ike, you've gotta go to her. She's this incredible person who knows everything you feel before you say it...she's always there...she's taught me a lot...."

"I know she's incredible, Moni," Isaac said. "I've always known. I don't know how to explain it."

"I do," Monica said quickly. "It's like you two are soulmates....two parts of the same whole. You share the same fate, the same soul. It's destiny working at last. Jamie needs love, and so do you. Destiny picked you two to work it all out."

Isaac looked at Monica. "That was beautiful, Monica....and it's just how I feel."
