"Jamie, are you ready?" Isaac asked from outside Jamie's closed bedroom door.
"One sec!" Jamie called back. Isaac leaned against the wall and sighed. That night, he was taking Jamie to see The Patriot. Taylor and Zac were downstairs on the couch, watching some TV.
The door opened and Isaac stood up. Jamie appeared in the doorway, dressed in a yellow tank top and cutoff jean shorts. A little backpack rested on her back, beneath the curls that tumbled to her shoulders.
"Wow..." Isaac breathed. Jamie smiled.
"Wow yourself," Jamie said.
"Are you ready to go?"
"Yeah. I think this will be fun."
"Okay, let's go." Isaac slowly reached out for her hand. Jamie looked down, but entwined her fingers with his, already beginning to relax.
~~~
"Zac, we've got to think of something," Taylor said, sipping his water.
"Karen's probably already got Monica turned against us. She's pretty upset that Ike is with Jamie now."
Taylor nodded thoughtfully, remembering how Jamie and Isaac had left the house hand in hand.
"I know Monica knows that Karen is trouble." Taylor sighed. "If only she knew..."
"Why don't you tell her?" Zac suggested.
"She won't listen to me."
Zac frowned. "We'll keep thinking, Taylor."
~~~
Monica had been sitting in the lobby of the theater, waiting for Karen in the bathroom after their movie, when Isaac and Jamie walked in. Monica turned her head, but had to look at them again.
She felt her heart sinking. Although things with Taylor were pretty screwed up, Jamie was still the best friend she'd ever had. She didn't want to be with Karen anymore.
Monica got to her feet and started over towards them when she felt a hand on her shoulder. "Where are you going?" Karen asked.
"To see Jamie..."
"I don't think so." Karen grabbed Monica's arm and headed out of the theater.
~~~
Jamie was glad she picked seats up near the top of the theater. She and Isaac had been sharing popcorn when the movie turned suddenly gory. Jamie turned her head from the screen.
"You okay?" Isaac whispered, putting their popcorn on the floor.
Jamie nodded and turned to the screen just in time to see Mel Gibson throw a hatchet into some guy's head. On impulse, she buried her head in Isaac's shoulder.
"Okay, it's over," Isaac whispered. "I'm sorry, I didn't know this was so graphic."
Jamie peeked a look at the screen and then realized what she was doing. She sat up, almost uncomfortably, and met Isaac's gaze.
"I didn't mind," Isaac smiled at her.
Jamie smiled back. She scooted closer and put her head back on his shoulder, and watched as Isaac reached over and held her hands carefully in his.
~~~
"Karen, you're hurting me," Monica said, pulling her arm away.
Karen didn't answer. Instead, she locked the door and picked up the phone.
"Hello, Taylor. Your girlfriend is on my side now."
