Ding-dong, rang the doorbell that Friday night. Mom and Dad had reluctantly agreed to the date. Mom didn't quite believe yet that it was really Zac Hanson who Anne was going out with.
"I'll get it!" Anne called. I followed her to the door.
"Hi, Zac," she said as she opened the door. "Come on in."
As Zac stepped through the doorway, I asked him, "Where are Isaac and Taylor?"
"Ike's in the car. Tay didn't come, remember?"
"Oh, yeah."
Just then my mom came into the room. "Mom," said Anne, "this is my boyfriend, Zac Hanson."
After greetings, Zac and Anne left with Isaac and Michelle.
I went into my room to do my homework. After a few minutes, I heard a knock on my door. It was Mom.
"Monica, can we talk?"
"Sure," I said. We went into my room and sat on my bed.
"I've noticed recently that you've seemed sort of...oh, I don't know...sort of depressed, or something. Does that have anything to do with Taylor?"
"I really don't know. Since last Thursday, I've started to feel more of a friendship towards him, rather than my old crush. But seeing my best friend and my sister with the other two Hanson brothers...well, I don't know...it does sort of depress me, and I don't know why."
"Is it just that you're jealous of them for having any guy at all, not necessarily a Hanson?"
I thought about that for a while. "Yeah, I guess so. I mean, it's always seemed like Michelle was a lot older than me. And I always knew Anne would get a boyfriend before me. I guess I just feel left out. And I wish there was someone out there who did want me."
"Don't worry. I promise, there is someone out there for you. You'll meet him eventually."
"Yeah, but sometimes I wish I had already met him. Will I know him the minute I meet him?"
She smiled. "You might. When I met your dad, it wasn't like love at first sight, but I did think that he was just like the man I'd been dreaming of. So I guess I did kind of know. Actually, I think you might have already met him, though I'm not sure."
With that cryptic comment, she left the room.
