Chapter 28

While we drove home, Michelle and Anne asked me all sorts of questions about Taylor and me. Laughing, I told them the whole story. I stopped laughing, though, when it came to the part about the almost-kiss. They both agreed I had done the right thing. I smiled and thanked them, because I had been really worried that I had messed up.

By this time, we had arrived at my house. All six of us got out. At the door, we said our goodbyes. Isaac and Michelle kissed. Zac and Anne did the same. Taylor leaned over and gave me a hug. "Goodnight, Monica," he whispered. "I had a wonderful time."

"Oh, Taylor, so did I," I replied. "Goodnight. I'll see you...tomorrow?"

"Yeah," he said. "I'll call you."

"Bye," I said, and watched him go. Michelle, Anne, and I went inside and soon got ready for bed. But we stayed up most of the night, talking about all sorts of things, mainly the party.

The next day, we didn't get up until eleven. After Michelle had left, Anne asked me, "Monica, do you wanna go over to their house?"

"Well, I do want to, but they're probably not even up yet. Taylor said he'd call me, so let's wait till then, okay?"

"Oh, all right," she agreed reluctantly. I smiled. This was so much better than the sister who refused to go over to their house or to see or talk to Zac. I was so glad she and Zac were back together. Then I started thinking of the relationship between Michelle and Isaac. I did think they had moved a little bit fast, but it seemed to be going just fine so far. I wondered if my and Taylor's relationship would ever be as stable as Michelle's and Isaac's seemed to be.

After a while, I decided I really wanted to tell someone about all that had happened between Taylor and me. I thought of my online friend Jamie, who was also a huge Hanson fan. I was starting to e-mail her when I remembered my promise to Isaac, Taylor, and Zac from several months ago. I had promised to keep it a secret that they were here in Austin. I e-mailed her anyway, but carefully didn't mention anything about Hanson. I had told her about the concert a long time ago, but that was all.

Not long after I had e-mailed Jamie, the phone rang. I ran to answer it. "Hello?"

"Hi, Monica."

I smiled as I recognized the voice on the other end. "Hi, Taylor. How are you today?"

""I'm fine, still a little tired, but good. Anyway, I got the CD."

I knew exactly which CD he was talking about. "Awesome. So...what time should we designate to listen to the song every day?"

"How about right before bed? That way we'll go to bed thinking of each other, not that I wouldn't anyway."

I blushed. What a sweetheart! "That sounds wonderful. How about 10:15?"

"That's just what I was about to say!" he laughed.

"Are you psychic or something, Taylor?" I asked teasingly.

"Probably," he replied.

I burst out laughing. "You know, you sound just like my sister. She always insists she's psychic."

"I knew you were going to say that!" Taylor said.

That comment made me laugh even harder. "Taylor," I gasped in between laughs, "why is it that Isaac and Zac are always thought of as the funny ones?"

"They aren't the funny ones!" he protested.

"I know. You're the funny one. But most of the fans think you're really serious, and that Ike and Zac are the funny people. I guess that's because you are usually quieter in public. It's only lately that you've been funny."

"It is not!!!" he complained.

"Well, okay," I revised my statement, "it's just lately that I found out how funny you were."

"That's better," he said in a jokingly arrogant voice, which made me start laughing again.

When I had calmed down enough to talk, I asked Taylor, "So what are we going to do today? Anne has been begging me to ask."

He was silent for a minute. I was about to ask him what was wrong when he said, "We can't do anything today. We have to go into the studio and record."

"Oh. Well, that's okay."

"Monica, there's more. We'll be in the studios for most of the rest of the time we're here."

I was angry for a minute. I had just found my boyfriend, and now he was being kept from me. Then I remembered that music was Taylor's life. I knew it was even more important to him than I was, and I realized that I didn't really mind. All the waiting, all the time away from him, was worth it, just to be able to call myself his.
