After we had hung up, Anne immediately ran over to me. "What are we doing today?" she asked excitedly.
"Anne, they can't do anything today. They're recording."
"But...but I wanna be with Zac!" she protested.
I groaned inwardly. She sounded so possessive. "Anne, you can't be with him every day, you know. He does have his own life. And I know you know how important music is to him. You'll just have to accept that music is more important to Zac than dating."
Anne stomped off to her room to sulk. I sighed. Maybe I shouldn't have said that. But it was the truth. Maybe I shouldn't have put it so bluntly. Then I remembered that I hadn't told Anne about Taylor's other bad news: that they would be recording for the majority of the rest of their stay. Oh, well. I decided to tell her later, when she was in a better and less possessive mood. If I had told her right then, I knew she would have gotten incredibly mad, even madder than she already was.
I had just picked up a book and sat down to start reading when the phone rang again. I figured it was probably Zac, so when Anne hurried out of her room, I let her answer it. As I opened my book, Anne came over to where I was sitting. "Monica, it's for you," she said.
I was confused. Why would Taylor be calling again? Maybe it was Michelle. I took the phone and said, "Hello?"
"Monica?"
"Yeah. Who is this?" I didn't recognize the voice, though it was definitely male.
"Isaac."
Isaac?? Why on earth was he calling me? "Um...hey, Isaac. Why are you calling?"
"I wanted to talk to you about something."
"Okay, but...why can't you talk to Michelle about it?"
He paused for a moment. "Well, actually...it's about her."
I didn't like how his voice sounded. Could something actually be wrong with their perfect relationship? "Is something wrong?" I asked, hoping he would say no.
"I'm not sure. We haven't been fighting or anything. It's just that lately, something seems to be...oh, I don't know...missing."
"What could possibly be missing from a relationship like yours?" I asked, confused.
"I can't really explain it. It's as though, all of a sudden, I realized she's not the one for me. And there's something else, too. I've been having these really freaky dreams lately, about a girl who is not Michelle. And I think that this girl is actually the one for me."
I was absolutely speechless. I could not believe what I had heard. The fact that he didn't think Michelle was the one for him anymore was shocking enough, since their relationship had seemed so perfect. But even more shocking was the statement about the dreams. My online friend Jamie, the same person I had just e-mailed that day, had been a Hanson fan almost as long as I had. A few years ago, she had told me about weird dreams she had had about Isaac, which sounded exactly like the ones Isaac was describing now. Back then, we had hypothesized that maybe Isaac had been having the same dreams. Now I was certain of it.
Finally I remembered Isaac on the phone. "So...what are you going to do?"
"I really don't know," he said sadly. "I just want to be friends, but I don't want to make Michelle angry."
"Why don't you call her?" I suggested.
"Yeah, I guess I will. Thanks for listening, Monica."
"Anytime, Isaac. Bye."
After I hung up, I ran to the computer. I just had to know if Jamie was having the dreams again. After waiting for several minutes for the connection to finish, I looked eagerly. Sure enough, there was a message from Jamie. I scanned it quickly, only to find, just like I thought, a mention of the dreams. I immediately replied to the message. I chose my words very carefully, because I wanted to reassure her without giving anything away.
After I had sent the message, I left the computer and returned to my book.
