Chapter 30

I had been reading for a while when once again, the phone rang. I went to answer it, assuming it was Michelle. "Hello?"

"Monica, it's me."

"Hey Michelle. What's up?" I wanted to know how it had gone with Isaac, but I couldn't let on that I knew.

"You are absolutely not going to believe this!"

"What happened?" I asked, though I knew what was coming.

"Ike and I broke up."

Even though I had known this already, I acted like I was shocked. "No way!!! How could you break up?? Your relationship has been perfect from the beginning!"

"That's what I thought. Obviously, I was wrong. Isaac actually did say that it was perfect at first. But then he said that he thought there was something missing from our relationship. He never did say what. He told me he'd really rather just be friends."

"What did you say?" I asked.

"Well, I thought about it for a while. Then I realized that he was right, that it would be better to just be friends. We moved way too fast, and this is what came of it. That's why I'm glad you and Taylor waited so long. Your relationship will probably last for a very long time. It might even be forever."

My heart leaped at those words. I had always wondered when I would meet my "special someone". Mom had said she thought I might have already met him. I had thought she might have been talking about Taylor, but I had quickly dismissed the thought, because that was during the time that Taylor and I were just friends. Now, however, I hoped that she and Michelle were right. I knew I wanted to be with Taylor for a very long time. I thought for a minute that it might be love, but then realized that it couldn't be. Not yet. We had only been going out for one day. Maybe in a few months, or even years, we could call it love, but not yet.

"Michelle, do you really think Taylor and I were...meant to be?" I asked then.

"Well, of course it's hard to tell right now, but from what I've seen, I think so."

I smiled. Then I was curious. "Did Isaac ever actually give a definite reason for wanting to break up?"

"Um...no, actually, he didn't. I think it might be another girl."

"What if it really is another girl? What will you do?"

"Nothing. He has the right to decide who he goes out with. And I don't envy her at all. Isaac's a great guy, but he really never was the one for me."

"Then why did you go out with him for two months?"

Michelle laughed softly. "Because I hadn't yet realized that he wasn't the one. I thought he was, from the first moment he looked at me at the concert. But I know there is someone else out there for him, someone who can make him happier than he ever was with me."

"I hope so," I said sincerely. "He's a great guy; he deserves a great girl."

"He certainly does. And he'll find her. I know he will."
