I looked up at Taylor shyly. I knew this was the right time for what I wanted to give him; I just wasn't sure where or how to begin.
Taylor was looking down at me while I looked at him. He saw my nervousness, I could tell. Taking my hands in his, he asked me, "Monica, what's wrong?"
"Nothing's wrong," I replied. After a few seconds of silence, I spoke again. "Taylor?"
"Hm?"
I took a deep breath, then decided this was the time. "Do you remember what happened at the other party?"
"The New Years one?"
"Yeah."
"Well, a lot of things happened...wonderful things. We started going out, we chose our official song..." He paused, smiling at the memories. "Which one were you thinking of?"
I smiled back shyly. "Remember watching the clock tick off the last few seconds of the millennium?"
"Yeah, that was fun."
I took another deep breath. This was it. "Do you remember what happened as the clock struck midnight?"
"I remember that I started to kiss you, and you said you weren't ready."
I closed my eyes briefly before opening them and looking directly into Taylor's eyes. This was really it, and I was ready. "Taylor...I am ready."
His eyes widened as he realized what I was saying. Then he smiled tenderly down at me. "Moni, are you sure?"
"Yes, Tay," I whispered. I had never been so sure of anything in my life.
"You've never done this before, have you?" Taylor asked.
"No," I admitted, worried that he had done this numerous times before.
Taylor breathed a sigh of relief. "Oh good...I haven't either. I was scared you were some kind of expert."
"I was thinking the same thing!" I said. "No, I've never been kissed. The right guy just never came along...until now," I finished, looking down shyly.
Taylor blushed. "Well, I guess we'll have to learn together then, won't we?" he said softly.
"I guess so," I said equally softly.
Carefully, Taylor took my chin in his hand and tilted my head up while leaning his head down to mine. Slowly, tenderly, our lips met.
The kiss was short, but it seemed to last an eternity. As we separated, I realized I had closed my eyes. I opened them and looked up at Taylor, whose eyes had also been closed.
"Wow...that was amazing," Taylor said. "You are amazing."
I could feel my cheeks turning red again. "That was absolutely the most wonderful experience of my life." And it had been. No matter what happened between Taylor and me in the future, I would always remember our first kiss.
