The next morning, I had just sat down with a book when the phone rang. I ran to answer it, positive it was Taylor.
"Hello?"
"Hey Moni."
I felt my mouth smiling automatically at the sound of his voice. I could tell he was smiling, too. "Hey Tay, what's up?"
"Well, I talked to Ike last night..." he trailed off.
"And?" I asked curiously.
"He told me everything...all about that girl and all."
"That's good. I'm glad he told you."
"Me, too. I was really starting to worry about him." Then he changed the subject. "So...what are you doing today?"
I thought for a minute. "Actually, I didn't have any plans yet...oh, wait a sec!"
"Yeah?"
"Michelle and I are gonna go shopping today. We have to find the perfect prom dresses, you know."
Taylor laughed. "Yeah, I know how you girls are. Can I come?"
"Nope."
"Oh please," he begged.
I smiled. This was so much fun, making him beg. "No, you can't come."
"Why not?" he demanded.
"You can't see my dress until the prom, of course! It has to be a surprise!"
"Well, fine then...be that way!" He pretended he was mad, but he didn't fool me.
"Fine, then...I will!" I said, also faking anger. But the effect was spoiled when I burst out laughing.
Through my laughter, I could hear another voice on the other end of the phone, faintly, as though someone was talking to Taylor. And I was right, for the next minute Taylor said, "Moni, I'm sorry, but I need to go. We're recording in just a little while."
"That's okay, Tay. I'll see you later!"
"Okay, bye!"
I hung up the phone and returned to my book to read until it was time for me to meet Michelle at the mall.
Twenty minutes later, I turned into the parking lot and began searching for a parking space. The mall was apparently very busy; there were almost no spaces available. Finally, I found one. I maneuvered the car in, and then walked to the mall entrance, where I spotted Michelle waving at me.
"Hey Michelle," I greeted as I approached. "Ready to find the perfect dress?"
"Yep! Let's go!"
We entered the mall to begin our search.
