Chapter 5

Thursday, August 10, 2000

The next evening, Michelle called me again. We chatted for a while about school and other stuff. Then, Michelle brought up Hanson.

"You're in the Hanson fan club, right?"

"MOE? Yeah," I replied. "Why?"

"Oh, just wondering. Could you bring your club stuff tomorrow? I'd be interested to see it."

"Sure. Are you interested in joining it?"

"Well, I don't know. That's partly why I wanted to see it, to decide. I mean, I'm not a huge fan. Their music is okay, though it's not my first choice. But that oldest one is sure good-looking!"

"Ike's okay, though I personally prefer - "

"Taylor," Michelle finished. "I know. You've told me several times. Anyway, I'd better go now. I have homework to do."

"You mean you haven't finished it yet? I'll let you go finish then. See ya tomorrow!"

"Bye, Monica!"

Friday, August 11, 2000

After school on Friday, I hurried to meet Michelle out by the front doors.

"Come on," she said. "We have some shopping to do!"

"Michelle," I said, "I'll go, but I can't get anything. I don't have any money with me."

"No, you have to get something. Consider it part of your birthday present."

"Thanks, but why is it necessary to get something? Where are we going?"

"Nope, I'm not telling you. You'll just have to wait and see!"

After some extensive shopping and arguing (Michelle that it was my birthday, me that I couldn't let her buy so much for me), we had finally both found outfits that Michelle called "suitable". We went to Michelle's house to drop off our backpacks and sleepover stuff and to get ready for wherever it was we were going. When we were finally ready, Michelle was wearing a dark green spaghetti-strap shirt with a horse on it and a pair of denim shorts, while I wore a purple shirt with a silver butterfly on it and white shorts. Michelle's hair was in a bun, and she had French-braided my hair. Her nails were dark green like her shirt, and mine were purple with a coat of silver over them to give the purple a shimmery effect. We got in Michelle's car and left the house.
