Two weeks later, Kimberly and Mrs. Lewis were settled in their new home. All of their belongings had been unpacked and put away. Kimberly was even beginning to like the idea of life in Tulsa.
"Ready to go, Kimberly?" called her mother from downstairs. They were going to go down to the local high school to register Kimberly for the next year.
Kimberly hurried down the stairs after quickly gathering her shoulder length light brown hair into a loose ponytail. "I'm here, Mom."
"All right, let's go."
They got in the car and drove the short distance to the school. As they parked in the parking lot and headed for the front door, Mrs. Lewis consulted a map of the school grounds. "It says here that the main office, where we'll register you, should be just to our right after we go inside."
By this time, they had gotten to the door. Kimberly went in first, and turned to her right, immediately spotting the door marked Main Office. "Right here, Mom," she said.
As they entered the office, Kimberly saw several people already there. One girl came up to her, a girl about her age, with curly black hair.
"Hi, there," she said. "Are you new here?"
"Yes," replied Kimberly. "Just moved here two weeks ago. You?"
The girl smiled. "No, I've lived here all my life. The thing is," she leaned closer to whisper the next part, "these people don't know what they're doing." She straightened up.
"What do you mean?" Kimberly asked, looking worried.
"Oh, I didn't mean to worry you. They won't mess up your schedule. You're new. They always take extra care for new students, so they won't decide to leave before the year has even started! But that's why I'm here. Yeah, I could just wait for school to start to get my schedule, but then it would inevitably be messed up. And they don't like to do changes after the first week, so if your schedule is messed up at the beginning of the year, and you don't get it fixed soon enough, you're stuck with it for at least a semester, and probably the whole year. But if you do it now, during the summer, you can go over it with them and get the errors corrected now, before the year starts."
"Sounds reasonable," laughed Kimberly. "I'll have to remember that."
"Yeah, I figured it out my freshman year. Oh, by the way, I'm Amy. Amy Thompson. What's your name?"
"Kimberly Lewis. But you can call me Kim."
"Lewis...that name sounds so familiar for some reason. Have you ever been here before?" Kimberly shook her head. "It's probably just coincidence...that is a pretty common last name, after all." She shrugged. "So what grade are you in?"
"I'll be a junior," said Kimberly. "You?"
"Same. Hey, maybe we'll have some classes together! We'll probably have at least one or two, since this isn't all that big of a school."
"That would be nice," said Kimberly happily. "At least I'll know one person!"
Amy thought for a minute, then said, "Hey, I know! You can come with me after you register. I'm going over to a friend's house," she blushed, "I'm sure they won't mind."
"A 'friend', huh?" Kimberly said. "Could it be...a boyfriend, perhaps?"
Amy nodded. "But he won't mind, I know he won't. His family always likes to meet new faces in the city. And he and his brothers are so nice!"
"Brothers, hmm? And how old might these brothers be?"
"Well, the youngest is six..." she trailed off at the look Kimberly was giving her. "Okay, okay! But he really is six! I know, I know. Okay, one of them is fourteen..."
"And...?" Kimberly hinted.
"And what?" Amy teased.
"Come on, I know there's gotta be at least one more, or you wouldn't have said 'brothers'. I don't think you were including the six-year-old when you said that."
"All right, you win," Amy relented. "The other brother is seventeen."
"Seventeen? Pretty good, although possibly a little old. How old is your boyfriend, anyway?"
Amy smiled. "Nineteen."
"Ooh, an older man! How neat! What are their names?"
"Isaac is my man, Taylor is the seventeen-year-old, and Zac is fourteen. His real name is Zachary," she added, "but don't ever call him that. He won't get mad, really, but he'll pretend to. He's just crazy, Zac is. But he's fun. They all are."
"Sounds like it," Kimberly said thoughtfully, wondering what her mom was going to think. "Amy, before we get too far into this, I'd better ask my mom if it's okay. She's never really allowed me to date before, so I'm not sure what she'd say about going over to the house of three strange boys, even with you. Especially since I just met you."
"I understand," said Amy. "My parents are like that, too...except about the dating part."
Kimberly went over to where her mom was still waiting. "Mom, can I ask you something?"
"Yes, dear?"
"Well, I met this girl named Amy, and she's really nice, and she wants to help me meet some more people."
"That's fine, honey."
"Mom, she wants me to come to her boyfriend's house with her to meet his brothers. Is that okay?"
Her mother thought about it for a minute. "Well...I suppose it's all right. Just don't stay too long."
By then, it was their turn to register. Quickly, Mrs. Lewis filled out all the paperwork, while Kimberly looked through the course listings to decide her schedule. After selecting the ones she wanted, they waited for a moment for the schedule to be printed. When Kimberly had gotten her schedule, she handed it to her mom and said, "Bye, I'll see you later!" Rejoining Amy, she said, "Okay, let's go!"
