A person must be promoted to Relief Captain by Vessel Operations after they have looked at your competency, and management skills. But you must start as Pilot first. This is a listing of training and qualifications that I met to become Pilot.

Benzene Workers Certification(in accordance with 46 CFR 197.530)

200 Hours of Steering Time while still working as a Tankerman

8 additional months at the wheel (close to another 1000 hours of steering time)

Exams for the Operater of Uninspected Towing Vessels License- U.S.C.G.
