dmarie's Phantom Of The Opera

After listening to The Phantom of the Opera on CD constantly for over 3 years and seeing Michael Crawford in Concert, I finally saw the entire musical. On August 20th, 1998 my husband and I both experienced it. That is truly what it is, an experience! It starred Brad Little who was WONDERFUL as The Phantom. (He is not related to us as far as we know.) We were in awe and very impressed to say the least. As we were driving home I decided to go ahead and get this webpage up.

While still in the glorious new Bass Hall in Fort Worth, Texas, I thought about how wonderful it will be when this musical makes it to the Silver Screen. I had visions of grand locations, wonderful costumes and all the gradeur that could go along with the screen presentation. I have a little article I got several months ago that said Antonio Banderas was considered to be The Phantom, winning over Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber at Sir Webber's 50th birthday party. I just knew that Antonio would be MUCH better than John Travolta, given those two choices. Matter of fact, the idea of John Travolta as The Phantom totally repulsed me! I was even somewhat excited this morning when I started this page.

Then I started the research of what was already on the web...

I spent about 4 hours visiting other POTO sites. I found the many sites dedicated to stopping the production of the movie. I found out I really need to read the book! I found that I wasn't sure how to make mine unique as required to get on the webring. I was so overwhelmed that I started to get a bit depressed. But since I had made up my mind that I was going to create a site dedicated to my favorite musical, I knew I had to continue!

August 22, 1998

I just got back from the Library. I found the book "The Angel of the Opera: Sherlock Holmes Meets The Phantom of the Opera" by Sam Siciliano. I will read it and provide a review as soon as possible.

REVIEW: This is a very good book. I have always enjoyed Sherlock Holmes stories and this was no exception. Erik is portrayed nicely and was believable in reference to the other POTO books I have read. Not to give anything away, I feel that Erik is rather happy at the end of this book although many will disagree with the ending saying it is in no way true to Erik.

So I will leave it up to you to decide. It is well worth reading.

September 10, 1998

I came home from work last night to find a note on the door telling me to push play on the VCR. My husband was already in bed and the house was dark. I decided to push play without turning on the light and was rewarded with the first few cords of Phantom of the Opera and some king of movement on the TV. I had just turned on "The Royal Albert Hall Celebration" at the part where The Phantom portion starts. I was further rewarded by Sarah Brightman and her beautiful voice. Then who should enter but Antonio Banderas my heart skipped a beat and waited for him to start to sing. This is my conclusion, there is NO WAY that I would want Antonio Banderas as Erik and I can not see how Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber would either! The man that sends chills thru me as Che in Evita makes me ill when he sings anything from POTO. I will boycott him starring in it. His spanish accent does nothing for the part least the lack of power that he has. I further feel that Music of the Night should not be sung by a female, no matter the caliber as it is lacking. That's my 2 or 3 cents worth, take it or leave it.
