DOROTHY IRENE PICKETT RUCKER, 96, passed
away on May 19, 2008, with interment at Elmwood
Memorial Park in Abilene, TX.
Mrs. Rucker was born in Paris, TX, to Albert and
Minnie Payne Pickett on Oct. 7, 1911. She married
Byron Rucker in Oct. of 1940 in her parent’s home.
She graduated from Ranger High School in the Class
of 1929 at Ranger, TX and received her undergraduate
degree from East Texas State Teachers College in
Commerce, & her Master’s from Texas Tech in Lubbock.
She and her husband were long time educators and
taught in several school districts. They returned
from the Brownfield school district and moved to
Abilene in 1978. She belonged to several professional
organizations including Delta Kappa Gama and Retired
Teachers in Abilene and Lubbock. She volunteered as
a docent at the Brownfield Museum and the Grace in
Abilene.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her
husband; and infant son; and three sisters. Her
sisters were Pauline Pickett Funk (RHS-1930), Mary
Pittman, Margaret Pickett Crossland, & Helen Pickett.
She is survived by one sister, Berta Field of Abilene;
several nieces and nephews including Susan King of
Brownwood, Kathryn King and husband Harry of San
Antonio & Julia Burrows and husband R.L. of Sherman;
great and great-great-nieces and nephews.
