GARLAND AUSTIN LANGFORD and Asbury B. Baker, both
of Canyon, TX were killed early morning of July 2, 1947,
when struck by an automobile 10 miles south of Amarillo
on the Canyon Highway. Garland attended Ranger High
School in the Class of 1938 at Ranger, TX.
They were hit by a car driven by Ottis Johnnie Hawkins,
operator of the Blue Bonnett Cafe at Plainview. The two
men had parked their car, a 1934 Chevrolet two-door,
just off the pavement and were changing a tire when
struck, highway patrolmen who investigated, said.
Patrolmen said Hawkins told them he was blinded by the
lights of approaching cars and did not see the car
of the two men until just before the crash. The right
front fender of his car, a 1939 Ford two-door, struck
the left rear fender of the Chevrolet, officers said.
The left rear wheel of the Chevrolet was jacked up at
the time of the crash, according to patrolmen.
Langford operated a radio shop in Canyon. He was 26
years old. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Willie
(Henson) Langford; two sons, Gary Don, 6 years old,
and Eddy Earl, 3; a daughter, Mona Lee, 4; his
parents, Wellie Langford "William" and Allie B. Beck
