RAYMOND SMOOT, 75, died in 1997 at Eastland,
TX, with burial at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Ft.
Worth, TX.
Mr. Smoot was born in Ranger, TX & graduated from
Ranger High School, Texas Wesleyan College and
North Texas State University. He served with
the U.S. Marine Corps' Company E, 28th Division
in Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II.
He married Frances Vick in 1950 in Fort Worth,
and was a teacher and coach for 35 years in the
Carbon, Birdville, John T. White, Smithfield,
Newark, Olden and Moran school districts. He was
a past commander of the American Legion post in
Moran, and was a past master of the Masonic lodges
in Smithfield, Moran and Ranger, a 32nd degree
Mason and a past area deputy grand master. He also
was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post
in New Boston, Shriner's Moslah Temple in Fort
Worth, Scottish Rite, & Mesquite and Rusk Street
Church of Christ.
He had two daughters; Vicki Lea Smoot Smith of
Muskeegan, MI, and Ginny Wilson of Fort Worth; two
brothers, William N. Smoot of Rising Star and A.C.
Smoot of Grapeland; six grandchildren; one great-
grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.
WIFE: FRANCES HELEN VICK SMOOT, 77, passed
away on May 1, 2008, with burial in Mount Olivet
Cemetery in Ft. Worth, TX.
Frances went to Baylor University College. She had
lived in Ranger, TX and was a member of the Ranger
Church of Christ. She was also known for her many
activities in Eastland with the Eastern Star. She
loved learning and teaching. She actually read the
whole volumes of the World Book Encyclopedia. Teaching
children at the school in Moran, TX, was her joy.
Everyone who knew her knew what a big heart she had
and how much she wanted to help those in need.
Frances was a member of the Eastern Star in Ranger.
She and her late husband, Ray, spent many vacations
in her beloved Hawaii. Frances was a nurturing "Gran"
to many and will be missed by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her soul mate & the love
of her life, Ray Smoot, and sister, Loys Smoot Baker.
Survivors at the time of her death: Daughters, Vicki
Pechacek of Bastrop and Ginny Wilson and husband,
David, of Alvarado; grandchildren, Jason Pechacek and
wife, Angela, of California, Jeremy Pechacek and wife,
Rami, of Fort Hood, Clint Johnson and wife, Lauren, of
New Jersey, Tessa Brown of Fort Worth, Nick Lantrip and
wife, Cara, of Arkansas and Brittany Wilson of Alvarado;
and five great-grandchildren.
BROTHER: WILLIAM N."BILL" SMOOT, 88, died in
June of 1997 at Brownwood, TX. Bill had lived in Rising
Star since 1940. He married Mary Wood in Baird in 1932,
and he had served in the U.S. Army. He was an oil field
worker and a farmer. He was a member of Pioneer Baptist
Church. He had two sons, Bill D. Smoot of Oplin & Odean
Smoot of Fort Worth; three daughters, Catherine Meador
of Pioneer, Kay Thompson of Early and Barbara Henson of
Cross Plains; one brother, A.C. Smoot of Grapeland; 21
grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren & five great-great
grandchildren. Interment was in the Sabanno Cemetery.
