FLORENCE "FLO" RHEBA ASHCRAFT BAUGHMAN
88, of Conroe, TX passed away on June 28, 2022,
with burial at Garden Park Cemetery.
She was born on April 12, 1934 in Eastland, TX to
Charles Pickney & Utile Buttler Ashcraft. She
spent most of her years in Ranger, TX & went to
Ranger High School in the Class of 1951. She was
a member of the drill team and then later a cheer-
leader. Like her Mother & 3 sisters, Flo was quite
musical, playing the piano for church & school
events.
After high school, she went to Ranger Jr. College,
then later Texas Tech University, majoring in Music
& Education. Upon graduating from Texas Tech, she
began her long, illustrious teaching career at a
school in Andrews, TX. While living in Andrews,
she met her future husband, the late Dennis Baughman.
They dated for 5 months and were married for 58 years
before his passing in June of 2015. After Andrews,
Flo & Dennis moved to Houston in 1957 & then moved
to Conroe in 1959. She & Dennis bought a Humble Oil
station on 105 and then later built another Humble
Oil station on Frazier, & yet another on the corner
of Frazier and Davis. They also owned the Tastee-
Freeze for a few years. After moving to Conroe, Flo
continued teaching primarily Kindergarten students,
first at Sam Houston Elementary, then at Classic
Preparatory, then moving to Armstrong Elementary
for its opening. After many years teaching Kinder-
garten, she became the Music Teacher at Armstrong
before retiring from teaching in 1982.
Even after retirement, Flo continued to play the
piano for many social & church events, including
her Sunday school class. She even recently played
Happy Birthday on her recent 88th birthday. As well
as playing the piano, Flo also enjoyed playing games,
especially Bridge & Yahtzee. She was also an avid
watcher of Wheel of Fortune. She's been a member of
FUMC-Conroe for 60 years. She & Dennis were charter
members of the Meandering Methodists camping group
as well.
She is survived two sons, Chris and wife Karen Baughman
of Conroe and Charlie & wife Paula Baughman of Colorado
Springs. She also has a surviving brother-in-law, Robbie
Baughman and his wife Antoinette Baughman, 4 grandkids,
Rebecca Meienberg & husband Ted of Colorado Springs,
Haley Baughman of Spring, TX, Tony Baughman of Orlando,
FL & Kelsey Baughman of Houston, TX, as well as 3 grand-
children, Michael, Nathaniel & Elizabeth. She is also
survived by countless cousins, nieces & nephews. Her
sisters were Lilian Ashcraft Cozby (RHS-1945), Margaret
Ashcraft Brown (RHS-1939), and Bernice Ashcraft Ervin
(RHS-1941).
HUSBAND: DENNIS DEAN BAUGHMAN passed away
June 23, 2015, with interment at Garden Park Cemetery
in Conroe, TX.
Dennis was born to William G. & Reba Williams Baughman
on March 3, 1934, in Alba, TX. They moved to Houston,
TX when he was ten years old. He attended Jefferson
Davis High School, where he excelled as a basketball
star and graduated in 1952.
After high school, Dennis worked briefly for the Humble
Oil Company before joining the U.S. Marine Corps. He
proudly served during the Korean War as a Classification
Chief. He was released from active duty in 1955, and
entered the USMC Reserves until his Honorable Discharge
in 1961. While stationed in San Diego, he appeared in
the movie Battle Cry.
After finishing his active duty with the Marines, he
returned to Humble Oil and worked there until 1963.
While working for Humble Oil Andrews, Texas, he met
his future wife, Florence Ashcraft, who was a school
teacher in the area. They dated for five months and
were married in Feb. of 1957. They initially moved
Houston, but soon moved to Conroe. In 1963, Dennis
bought a Humble Station on East Davis Street. He
later constructed a station on the corner of Wilson
Road and Frazier and owned a third station on the
corner of Frazier Street and Highway 105. After
leasing the stations, he also owned a Tastee-Freeze
on North Frazier where McKenzie’s Bar BQ now sits.
After that he spent much of his working career
selling cars. He started with Max Mahaffee Ford &
moved to D&D Buick-Pontiac; which later became
Weisner Buick-Pontiac. He was co-owner of Standard
Motor Company with the late Jimmy Copeland. Later,
he worked for Clark Bottling Company, and was the
area leader during the 1980 U.S. Census for the
Houston region. After the census, he returned to
the car industry where he worked for Jimmy Copeland
at his dealerships in Navasota and Tomball. He has
also driven trucks delivering Pepsi Cola, Schlitz
Beer, golf carts and even bricks.
Upon retirement, he stayed active and served as a
member of Montgomery County Appraisal Board. He has
been a member of the FUMC-Conroe for 55 years,
joining on Mother’s Day. He is currently a member
of the Seekers Sunday School class and the Tuesday
morning breakfast Bible study. Dennis was a member
of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and the Shriners.
He has been a member of the Conroe Country Club for
over 50 years. Dennis and Flo loved to travel in
their RV. He was a charter member of the Meandering
Methodists camping group.
Dennis is survived by his wife of 58 years, Flo
Baughman, two sons, Chris and wife Karen Baughman
of Conroe, TX. And Charlie and wife Paula Baughman
of Colorado Springs, CO. Four grandkids; Rebecca
Baughman and Tony Baughman of Colorado Springs, CO;
Haley Baughman and Kelsey Baughman of Conroe, TX.
One brother, Robbie Baughman and his wife Antoinette
Baughman, a sister-in-law Lilian Cozby and husband
Reynolds of Waco, TX., as well as countless cousins,
nieces and nephews.
