JOHN LANDRUM SMITH, JR., 78, (known by
family & friends as Lanny or Ducky) passed away
in North Richland Hills, TX on June 23, 2018.
Lanny was born Sept. 1, 1939 in Farmersville, TX.
Lanny's family moved to Ranger, TX in 1952, and
he graduated from Ranger High School in the Class
of 1957. After graduating from RHS, Lanny attended
Ranger Jr. College before graduating from North
Texas State University. He married Lena Rose
Carpenter in Jan. of 1963. Lanny was drafted by
the U.S. Army just days after his marriage! He
was discharged from the Army right before the
USA was sending troops to Viet Nam. Lanny went
back to work at Stevens Corporation as an Officer
and Comptroller until the company closed in 2000.
Lanny was a wonderful son, husband, father, sibling,
cousin and friend to many. He was an avid golfer,
& always enjoyed playing in the RHS Exes Homecoming
Golf Tournaments. He was a member of Legacy Church
of Christ, formerly Pipeline Road Church of Christ
where he served as a deacon.
Lanny was preceded in death by his parents, John L.
Smith & Joy Womble Smith, and his son John Landrum
Smith, III (Jay).
He is survived by his wife, Lena; daughter, Laura
Elizabeth Smith of Dallas; sister, Joyanne Smith
Hoover Hathcock (RHS-1959) of Ranger; brother, Tom
Smith (RHS-1961) (Bonnie Smith) of Farmersville;
sister, Janice Smith Townzen (RHS-1964) (Terry
Townzen of RHS-1962) of Arlington; nephews Scott
Hoover, John Hoover and Terry Guy Townzen, Jr.;
nieces Valerie Hoover Cook, Jennifer (JT) Townzen
Coats, and Gena Smith Lahar. Additionally, he is
survived by great-nephews and great-nieces and
beloved cousins.
WIFE: LENA ROSE CARPENTER SMITH, 78,
passed away May 24, 2019 in North Richland Hills,
TX. Lena was born in Bonham, TX on March 19, 1941
to Theodore & Opal Stephenson Carpenter. She married
Lanny Smith (RHS-1957) and he died in 2018. She is
survived by a daughter, Laura Smith.
