The Ranger High School band was organized in September of
1924 with 35 students enrolling for music. Leo M. Underwood
was the bandmaster and served until 1926. Over the years,
the band has been the "Spirit of Ranger" winning many out-
standing awards. During the early years, the high school
band was combined with the Ranger Jr. College band.

1949 BAND WINS HONORS AT REGION MEET SATURDAY
(Ranger Times 5/2/1949)
Ranger's School Band came in for its share of honors at the big
band Interscholastic League contest in San Angelo coming away
with a first place in the colorful marching event and in third
place in the concert division, and third in sight reading.
In the solo events Ranger won two first places, Anne Dorris
taking first place as a twirler and Joyce Garvin winning first
in the melophone division. Other solo events were coronet, Bob
Crawford, Class II, second; bass, Gene Hamilton, Class II,
second; clarinet, Eugene Sutton, class II, third: saxophone,
Jim Smith, Class I, second; saxophone, Donally Dooley, Class I,
third; student director, Bob Crawford, third and student
director, June Ann Morton, second.
Nearly 900 band members representing 16 bands participated in
the contests which were conducted at the stadium in San Angelo
on Friday and Saturday.
