Texas was awarded 31 Carnegie grants in the early 1900s to build libraries.
Many of the buildings that were constructed no longer exist. Of the 13
library buildings remaining, most are used for other functions. All photos

1. BALLINGER
Built in 1909 and located at 204 N. 8th
St. It is still a public library.

2. BELTON
Built in 1911 and located at 201 N. Main
St. It is now the Belton Bell County Museum.
3. BRYAN
Built in 1904 and located at 111 S. Main St.
It is now the Carnegie Center of Brazos
Valley Museum. This is the oldest remaining
Carnegie Library building.
4. CLEBURNE
Built in 1905 and located at 201 N. Caddo St.
It was a library until 1978 and is now the
Layland Museum. (National Register of
Historic Places)
5. FRANKLIN
Built in 1914 being located at 315 E. Decherd and
appears to be a similar design to the building
in Palestine. It is now the Robertson County
Library.
6. GAINESVILLE
Built in 1914 and located at 201 S. Denton St. The
library moved in 1963 and the building is now
the Butterfield Stage.
7. JEFFERSON
Built in 1907 and located at 304 W. Lafayette
St. It is still the Jefferson Carnegie Library.
8. MARSHALL
Built in 1907 and located at 711 Wiley Ave. It
is now the Willis J. King Administration Building
on the Wiley College campus.
9. PALESTINE
Built in 1914 and located at 502 N. Queen St.
It is now the Palestine Chamber of Commerce.

10. SHERMAN
Built in 1915 and located at 301 S. Walnut
St. It is now the Red River Historical
Museum.
11. STAMFORD
Built in 1910 and located at 600 E. McHarg St.
It is still the Stamford Carnegie Library.
12. TERRELL
Built in 1910 and located at 207 N. Frances St.
It is now the Terrell Heritage Museum and once housed
memorabilia from the No. 1 British Flying Training
School which has been moved to another location near
the airport.
13. TYLER
Built in 1904 and located at 125 S. College St.
It is now the Smith County Historical Museum.
COMMUNITIES WHOSE CARNEGIE BUILDINGS NO LONGER EXIST:
ABILENE..............building demolished.
BROWNWOOD............building demolished.
CLARKSVILLE..........building destroyed by fire in 1980.
CORSICANA............building demolished, built in 1906 and
replaced by a new city library in 1967. The Carnegie Library
is pictured above in a mural located at the city library on
Collin Street.
DALLAS...............buildings demolished, built in 1901 at
Commerce & Harwood Streets in downtown Dallas, had 10,000 books.
DALLAS...............buildings demolished.
EL PASO..............building demolished.
FORT WORTH...........building demolished.
GREENVILLE...........building demolished.
HOUSTON (2)..........built in 1899 and 1925, both demolished, new
city library built on 1925 site in 1982, two of the original pillars
are behind it.
MEMPHIS..............building demolished.
PECOS................building demolished.
PITTSBURG............building destroyed by fire in 1939.
SAN ANTONIO..........building demolished.
SULPHUR SPRINGS......building demolished.
TEMPLE...............building destroyed by fire in 1918.
