Nanquan (Southern Fist)

Nanquan, as its translation implies, is comprised of movements and techniques which characterize the martial art styles of southern China.  A multitude of southern Chinese boxing systems such as yong chung quan (wing chun kuen), hong jia quan (hung gar kuen), and bai mei quan (bak mei kuen or white eyebrow fist) were combined to offer a thorough representation of southern Chinese kung fu.  While spectators are often amazed by the dynamic grace and acrobatics of changquan, they are simply awed by the brutal physicality that is nanquan.  The movements of nanquan are forceful and violent.  Emphasis is placed on punches and hand techniques.  Kicks are usually kept low.  Some would describe nanquan as completely external since it relies on more physical force than northern wushu.  The physical nature of this style requires competitors to be in peak physical condition.
