The Weapons of Wushu
Whether for hunting or warfare, weapons are found in every culture of the world. China is definitely no exception. A diverse array of weapons can be found in China's ancient arsenal. There are three main categories of wushu weapons:
Long weapons (such as spear and staff)
Short weapons (such as sword, saber and double hook swords)
Flexible weapons (chain whip, three-section staff, rope dart, etc)
Weapons training is essential in wushu. Students begin learning them early in their formation. Modern international wushu competition lends more focus on sword, saber (or broadsword), staff and spear. Just as each style of wushu has its own distinct characteristics, so does each weapon. Not only must athletes master technique, they must also learn to exude the unique traits of their weapons.
