Carl's Place...

HELLO AND WELCOME TO MY PLACE ON THE WEB!

You've Got a Friend

GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

My name is Carl Conkling and I live in the great state of Texas.

Yellow Rose of Texas

The above map is how we Texans view the good old USA...*S*

The name of my town is Teague. It is located about 50 miles east of Waco & about 90 miles south of Dallas/Ft. Worth.

The above link shows the current weather conditions for Teague. It can also take you to current conditions for other cities in the U.S. Check it out..*S*

I am by birth a native Californian as I was born at Balboa Naval Hospital; SanDiego, California on April 6, 1949. Now you should be able to figure out how old I am...*lol*

My formative years were spent in Cheyenne, Wyoming back in the 50's and 60's.

In '68 after graduating from high school I joined the US Marine Corps during the Viet Nam War. I was never sent to Nam, but spent my service time in California, the Panama Canal, Virginia and back to Califorinia to finish my tour of duty.

I have always liked the Marine Corps logo shown above. It is called the "Eagle, Globe and Anchor". It gets its name from the fact that it shows an Eagle on top of a Globe with an Anchor passing through the globe. This particular symbol came from a sight called Leatherneck.com However this page isn't working any more.
You will find this logo somewhere on a Marine's uniform whether it is the dress blues or the every day uniform. It is even found on a Marine's cover(cap). It comes like the one above or in black or in gold. The gold one is worn on the dress blue uniform and also on the white cover(cap) a Marine wears on his or her head. I am proud of the fact that I once wore the uniform of the United States Marine Corps.
This particular EGA is for an officer's cover(cap). A very famous saying of all Marines everywhere is "Semper Fidelis" or "Semper Fi" as it is sometimes shortened to. It means "Always Faithful".

I moved to my present location of Teague in '79 where I have been since. I work for the state of Texas. I work as a caregiver for mentally retarded folk Mexia State School.

A hobby I have is being a portable Disc Jockey. This one is a bit more expensive hobby as popular tunes run up & down the charts and what was popular today may not be popular tomorrow. I pack up my sound system and go to different places in the area around where I live and deejay dances, wedding receptions and company parties. My specialty is playing oldies Rock-n-Roll and Country. Sometimes I mix in big band tunes and even some bluegrass now and then.

I also work at a local radio station where I am the host of a Bluegrass Gospel show for 3 hours. This show is quite popular in the area. The listeners can call in their favorite Bluegrass Gospel tunes and hear them on their radio.

I really enjoy doing this program as I really like Bluegrass music, and I also enjoy singing and playing Bluegrass music.

I play the autoharp, an instrument made popular by Maybelle Carter, of the Carter Family back in the '20s, '30s and '40s . John Sebastian of the group "The Lovin' Spoonfull" is another famous autoharpist. You can hear him play one on the tune "Summer in the City", used in the 3rd Die Hard movie. Another famous autoharpist is Dolly Parton. The group I am a member of is called the Hill Country Gospel Singers and we make appearances in area churches.

Here is a pic of my autoharp. It is an Oscar Schmidt autoharp. They have been the premier autoharp makers since 1879.

Some of my favorite Bluegrass artists are as follows

The Isaacs, The Principles

Flatt & Scruggs, The Bluegrass Thouroughbreds

The Sullivan Family, 3rd Tyme Out,

Karl Shiflett & The Big Country Show, and Bill & Laurie Sky, Blue River Sound, High Standard, 5 For The Gospel

The above link will take you to my BLUEGRASS PAGE. On it you will find pics of these groups

Well, believe it or not I too have caught the Beanie Baby bug. These little creatures will grab hold of your heart in no time. Not only have I been bitten I have even joined the Beanie Babies Offical Club. Below is a copy of my official membership certificate. *huge smile*

BBOC

My list of Beanies includes over 300 different ones. Including the ones below and many more.

Of all the Beanie Babies I have these two are perhaps my favorite ones.

Nibbler because his birthday and mine the same. April 6th.

The 99 Signature Bear because a very dear friend sent him to me. *VHS*

I was about 5 years old when above pic was taken. Found it in a locket my mom had. The pic is from my kindergarten class.

This was my graduation pic from high school. Just before going into the Marines.

This pic was taken on my front step here in Teague, Texas!...*S*
