season in paradise

newspapers lay in stacks
open but intact
tri-fold wrinkled headlines
say nothing of importance
no impending doom today

tv nonsense racket
annoys only the household pets
talked over and unnoticed
but providing a certain security
peter jennings would surely tell us
if the world was going to end today

piles of unopened mail
unaccepted offers
unpaid bills
and insincere condolences
oddly sharing a common insignificance

got your message
yeah, well
thanks for the thought
press seven to delete
and, you know that email?
it wasn’t funny either

it’s funeral season
in paradise

august 2000
