Resident Evil

I guess I have a thing for zombie movies. Not the zombies, though. Just the movies they're in. I love teh Evil Dead trilogy. Redneck Zombies is probably my favorite Troma film. And no matter how bad it is, I just can't help but like Resident Evil. I can't think of any other reason. I've never even played any of the games. Oh well. Anywho, the movie goes like this:

The Umbrella Corporation runs pretty much everything, and they have a top secret underground facility for illegal research. The facility is called The Hive (due to its uncanny resemblance of a beehive, I guess). One of the projects going on in The Hive is the T-Virus. The T-Virus is used to reanimate dead bodies by employing a scientific fallacy. Someone set the T-Virus free. It got into the air conditioning and spread throughout The Hive. Since the only possible cure hasn't been proven effective (or mentioned in the movie), the Red Queen (the Central Computer of The Hive) sees containment as the only option. Everyone in The Hive is locked in and killed with nerve gas (or drowned by the overactive sprinkler system).

It just so happens that The Hive is guarded by a fake mansion, owned by the Umbrella Corporation, and lived in by our heroine, Alice (Milla Jovovich). (Her name isn't revealed until the closing credits, kinda like Boba Fett in Empire). She wakes up in the bathroom, offers a gratuitous boob shot, and goes outside. She can't remember anything. Out of nowhere comes the SWAT-type team. They also work for the Umbrella Corporation, and they need to find out what happened and why the Red Queen went homicidal. They all take the train down to The Hive, picking up a cop named Matt and Alice's fake spouse, Spence.

The first thing they need to do is thin out the cast. Right now, there's Alice, Spence, Matt, The Leader Guy, The Medic, The Blond guy, JD, Kaplan, and Rain. That's nine characters, more than enough for a movie like this, and, hey, only one gets to be alive at the end, so lets get started. First, the team splits up. Rain, JD, and Matt go off somewhere so the rest of the characters can join up with them later. Leader, Medic, and Blond Guy get trapped inside a corridor with fast-moving lasers that quickly cut them to bits. Alice, Spence, and Kaplan stay and watch the others die. Then they go in and shut down the main power

Meanwhile, Rain, Matt, and JD are waiting to get caught up with, when Rain discovers a survivor. This survivor was pale white, had blood all over her mouth, was limping, making gutteral sounds, and chanting, "brains... brains...", so she obviously poses no threat. There was no way she could be undead. So Rain goes to help her and gets bitten. She and JD start shooting her, and eventually she goes down, only to disappear a few seconds later. The rest of the characters finally catch up, and they're suddenly surrounded by hundreds of pale, limping, half-eaten dead people chanting, "brains". Someone points out that these are the people who worked there. Someone else says that can't be, since the people who worked there are all dead. 2+2=? Anyway, they all run away, and JD gets caught and partly eaten.

At this point the movie starts to fall apart. There's a series of unconnected scenes in which nobody dies, except some zombies, and the audience gets the plot explained to them. Eventually, the traitor is revealed, some more people die, and the giant mutant that they keep hinting at finally shows up. Alice gets out of The Hive unscathed, and a bunch of guys in white suits and masks show up to run some tests and reopen the hive.

Alive eventually comes to, and no one's around. She goes outside, and the city is in shambles, setting up for the sequel.

I liked this movie a lot. I really want to own aa copy. Does that make me a bad person?

Ok, the zombies didn't really chant, "brains... brains..."
