October is Domestic Abuse Awareness Month

General Facts and Information
*In the United States, domestic violence crimes account for up to 40 percent of all calls to police.
*According to the FBI, domestic violence claims the lives of four women each day.
*While men are more likely to be the victims of a violent crime, women are far more likely to be the victim of domestic and sexual assault. A recent survey by the Department of Justice found that 1 in 6 women - compared with 1 in 33 men - experienced rape in their lifetimes.
*Domestic violence is both a national and a worldwide crisis. According to a 2000 UNICEF study, up to half the female population of the world becomes the victims of domestic violence.
*According to the Department of Justice, about half of women raped or physically assaulted by an intimate partner were victimized multiple times by the same partner.
*A 1992 national survey by the Family Violence Prevention Fund found that 13% of women surveyed had been physically attacked by their partner.
*A Philadelphia study found that 20% of women presenting with injuries at emergency rooms were victims of domestic violence.
*A 1988 study by the National Women Abuse Prevention Project found that physical abuse of women resulted in more injuries to women than rape, muggings and automobile accidents combined.
*There exist 3 times more animal shelters than battered women's shelters in the United States.
