Robert Carroll McGehee

was born in Tennessee in 1815 in Tennessee. He lived with his family through thier move to Illinois. He probably lived in Morgan county Illinois along with the rest of his family.

We suspect the name Carroll is a family name but that has not been substantiated. Elijah McGehee who lived in the same area of the McGehees in Tennessee as well as in Lawrence county Mo, had a child also named Carroll, and a child named Lucinda (James and Jane had a duaghter named Lucy, as did one of Roberts sisters). We have not discovered the proof yet but we suspect that Elijah was a family member and that there is a Carroll out there somewhere.

There is a Robert McGehee listed as fighting in one of the batallions of the Blackhawk war (1830 era)but it is uncertian at this time if it is our Robert Carroll McGehee or a different man altogether.

Robert was married twice. First to Elizabeth Bray on March 25, 1838 probably just after arriving in Barry county. It is believed that the family came to Barry county Mo in or around 1836. Rober Carroll and Elizabeth had a number of children.

Martha Elizabeth McGehee was born in 1843 and married William Wetby Mason July 18, 1860. The couple had three children, James, Harvey and Lenora.

Louisa McGehee was born in 1845 and I have no other informaiton about her at this time.

George William McGehee would be the first in this family group to go to the "McGee" spelling. It is unclear at this time why his name was spelled McGee, but according to sources it is spelled McGhee, McGeehee, and McGheehee. At one time George William McGee (McGehee) had a farm laborer living with his family named James E. PIM, age 16 born in Ohio, father in Ohio and mom in PA

George W. is buried in the Marionville Cemetary.

Mary Jane McGehee was born Oct 3, 1873 in Green county Mo. She would later marry Caleb W Andrew. Little else is known about her at this time.

Allison McGehee was born in Mo, in 1857. As with her siblings very litte at all is known about Allison.

In 1850 Robert Carroll McGehee or, "R. C. McGehee" was in attendance of his brothers probate auction. Records indicate he purchased a clock for the sum of $

It is believed that sometime between 1857 and 1860, Elizabeth Bray McGehee passed away. On September 9, 1860 Robert Carroll McGehee married Nancy Elkins in Lawrence county Mo. It was not long afterward (possibly a matter of months) that Robert Carroll McGehee's home was approached by several "bushwhackers" of which there was no shortage in Lawrence county at the time from what I have understood. These theives told Robert that he could leave within 24 hours or die, his wife was pregnant which makes me believe it was sometime late in 1861, and he had small children, his youngest being between 3 and 8, so he decided to leave. He left his home and went to Green county Mo.

I have wondered if this had something to do with his marriage. Maybe a disgruntled boyfriend? There is however no evidence that I have seen to indicate any reasoning at all.

Robert and Nancy McGehee had several children together. Many of them are seen in a picture below.

Elizabeth Ann McGehee was born August 19, 1861.

William McGehee was born Nov 24, 1862

Jane McGehee was born September 4, 1864 and she married a man named Will French, who is also seen in the picture below.

Eunice Francis McGehee was born May12, 1866 and married Andrew Bray Pennington, on March 28, 1895 in Springfield, Green county , Missouri.

Sarah McGehee was born on September 20, 1869.

Robert Carroll McGehee lived to be 75 years old. He died at Fair Grove Missouri.
