Hotaru is the daughter of Proessor Tomoe and goes to the same school as Chibi Usa, Minato-ku Juuban Elementary School. She has a very weak body, and gets tired very easily, but she has a strange power that can be used for healing injuries. The people at her school think it is gross however, so she do not have any friends except for Chibi Usa.
Hotaru was killed in an explosion at her fathers lab. To bring her back to life, her father made a deal with the Demon Master. He traded his soul for Hotaru's life. However, Hotaru was possessed by an evil entity known as Mistress 9 while her father was possessed as well.
Mistress 9 did not show herself however, until the demon master forced Hotaru to swallow Chibi Usa's pure heart. This released evil Mistress 9.

Mistress Nine's goal was to destroy the world by summoning Master Pharoah with the holy grail. Hotaru however fought against Mistress inside her and destroyed Mistress Nine when Hotaru transformed into Sailor Saturn.
However, in the process Hotaru convinced herself that the only way to save the universe is to destroy the world along with Master Pharoah 90.
But before she could do this Sailor Moon became Super Sailor Moon, defeated the Master Pharoah and turned Hotaru back into a baby to relive her life with her father. Later in Sailor Moon Stars, she then grew rather quickly to become Sailor Saturn.
