Those who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night. -- Edgar Allen Poe
GHOST BEAR
By
Donna Baker
The Polar Bear
standing silent in the night
its silhouette
a statue
frozen in time.
Blending in
with his surroundings
appearing to be nothing
but a snowdrift
outlined by the moonlight
shining down
through a cloudless sky
Stars twinkling in the stillness
of the icy blackness
in the artic night
Sleeping,
silently breathing
dreaming of other nights
other lifetimes
listening to the spirits
who whisper to him
as he sleeps
The darkness fades
stirred by a breeze
the bear awakens
taking in the life of a new day
sunlight glaring, reflecting off the snow
that sparkles with pleasure
at the warmth
of its creator
Standing
the bear gazes
across a snowy desert
surveying his surroundings
watching his icy domain
Guarding, Protecting
the knowledge given him
in the night
Strong, silent
ever seeking
knowing, feeling
Protecting
Saying nothing
a part of his surroundings
watching, listening
there are those who know
the love for his relations
he feels
those who take the time
to watch his example
listen to his silence
feel the presence
of his spirit
will know
will appreciate
the silence
the knowledge
the love
of the Ghost Bear
