8. What is "false" pleasure? Do you agree that pleasure can be false? Why does Plato make use of this strange idea? How important is pleasure as a topic for utopia?

"False" pleasure seems to be what we term "relief." When someone is in pain, the first thing on his or her mind is relief. This person would experience a pleasant feeling once the pain had been alleviated, but the pleasant feeling is not true pleasure. It is merely a comparatively nice sensation with respect to the earlier pain. I agree with this assertion, as I feel so many of our perceptions are judged in comparison with our past perceptions. Plato probably uses this idea to help us realize how many of the comforts we enjoy are really just satisfactions of voids in our lives. Since Socrates believes pleasure comes from satisfying mental needs, it sounds like support for improving the mind. Also, it is important to think about pleasure in a utopia, since in an ideal world, one would hope to have pleasure. However, it is difficult to be able to perceive pleasure without pain, since the comparison is needed. Does a utopia require pain as well, then? It would seem that it does, so that one would be able to discern pleasure from it.

Does ANYONE see what's kinky about my answer? I don't see it.
