My Life as a 10-year-old Boy
By Nancy Cartwright
Published: 2000
Genre: Autobiography
Info: Nancy Cartwright is the voice of
Bart Simpson on America's most popular prime-time animated show, The Simpsons. She began
working on Simpsons shorts in 1987, when the Tracey Ullman Show needed something for filler.
In a few years, the shorts evolved into the show we watch today.
Synopsis: This being an autobiography, we
hear about Cartwright as a child and her budding aspirations. We follow her hijinks from childhood all the way
to the year 2000 and learn some facts about the show's progression along the way. Since this book is still
relatively recent, you find out some stuff about the more recent shows, too! (I was pleasantly surprised by this.)
All in all, it was interesting to learn more about the lady who brings us that king of scamps.
Analysis: Chapters organized almost entirely in chronological order, this
autobiography gives an accurate timeline of the show and Cartwright's role in it. There
are quite a few chapters on the guest voice actors who were on the show, such as Mickey
Rooney and Mel Gibson. It's interesting to learn all the nuances and trials of a voice actor's
life.
Recommendation: Fans of The Simpsons might enjoy the
behind-the-scenes tidbits provided by Cartwright. Her life has been interesting, so
this is a quick read.
