Baseball
Treasures
Douglas Congdon-Martin and
John Kashmanian
Schiffer Publishing, Ltd.,
1992 Baseball
Treasures is an expensive coffee-table sized
book filled with photographs of items from the
baseball memorabilia collection of co-author John
Kashmanian. It is well worth the the hefty $70
cover price if you are a baseball history nut.
|
Long-time collector Kashmanian has the one of
the finest baseball memorabilia collections in the
country, with a value totaling somewhere in the millions,
and the purpose of this book was to give the average
baseball historian and fan a chance to share in the joy
of his collection. The 254-page book is simply filled to
the brim with beautifully-taken photographs of little
pieces of baseball history, from the 1840s thru the
1970s, with an emphasis on turn-of-the-century items.
Players chronicled in the book
include Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Jackie Robinson, and
Honus Wagner, among hundreds of others. Kashmanian
collected anything and everything related to
baseball--uniforms, bats, gloves, photographs,
autographs, letters, balls, posters, advertising
signs, cards, statues, trophies, paintings, cigar
boxes, mugs, china, toys, banks, pins,
pennants--you name it, Kashmanian seems to have
at least one of them.
The format of the book is simple--it is
divided up first into categories of
memorabilia--"Hero Images," "Tools
of the Game," "Baseball for
Sale"--then each chapter begins with a two
to three page introduction to the type of
memorabilia pictured within. Then the photographs
begin. Each page contains at least two and
sometimes up to nine or ten high-quality
photographs of memorabilia that the average
collector will never have a chance to own.
Underneath the photographs, the captions will
tell you a short bit about each item.

Baseball Treasures is
by far the best book on baseball memorabilia that I have
ever run across. If you are a collector of baseball
memorabilia or simply a fanatic about baseball history,
you will get a huge kick out of this book.
