1955-72 Pittsburgh Pirates

  • Won 4 National League batting crowns

  • Had a .317 lifetime batting average

  • Won the NL MVP in 1966 when he hit .317 with 29 homers and 119 RBI.

  • Had a .328 batting average in the 1960s--the highest in the majors.

  • Hit .351 in 1961, the first of four seasons in which he batted more than .340.

  • Was signed by the Dodgers in 1954, but the Pirates used a loophole in the waiver rules to sign him in 1955.

  • Hit .414 with 12 hits in the 1971 World Series. He was named the Series MVP.

  • Became the first Hispanic member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973 after a special election.


1972, Clemente gets his last career hit--#3,000

  • Played more games in right field than anyone else in National League history.

  • A superb fielder, Clemente won a Gold Glove every year from 1961 thru 1972. He was considered to have one of the quickest and most accurate throwing arms in the history of the game.

  • Helped lead the Pirates to NL championships in 1960 and 1971. Hit safely in every World Series game in which he appeared.

  • Appeared in 12 All Star games.

  • Led the NL in assists a record five times.

  • Got his 3,000th hit on the last day of the 1972 season. He died in a plane crash three months later while helping to deliver relief supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.
