1936-41, 45-56 Cleveland Indians

  • Struck out 17 batters in a major league game in 1936, a then major league record. He was still in high school.

  • Pitched three no-hitters and 12 one-hitters during his career.

  • Broke his own record in 1938 when he struck out 18 batters in one game.

  • Pitched a no-hitter on Opening Day, 1940.

  • Served in combat duty with the Navy, 1942-44. Earned six battle citations as a gun crew chief.

  • His fastball is considered to be one of the fastest in baseball history. This led to his nickname of "Rapid Robert."

  • Upon returning from World War II, Feller had his best season ever in 1946--26 wins and 348 strikeouts, then a major league record for strikeouts in a season.

  • Elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962.

  • Led the AL in wins in 1939, 40, and 41.

  • Had won 107 games by the time he was 23.

  • Won 20 or more games six times.

  • Helped pitch the Indians to the 1948 World Series championship.
