  • Held one of the most famous records in all of sports for over 65 years--his streak of 2,130 consecutive games played, only recently broken by Cal Ripken.

  • Considered the greatest first baseman of all time by most baseball historians.

  • Holds the AL record for RBI in a season, 184 in 1931, breaking his own record of 175 set in 1927.

  • Had a .340 career batting average in 2,164 games played.

  • Batted .361 in World Series play with 10 HR.

  • Gehrig's career came to a tragic end when he contracted amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in late 1938 or early 1939. The disease is now known as "Lou Gehrig's disease." He died only 2 years after retiring from baseball.
