  • Averaged over .400 from 1921-25, the only player in major league history to do so over a five year span.

  • Has a .358 lifetime batting average, a National League record and second only to Ty Cobb in both leagues.

  • Won six straight batting titles, 1920-25.

  • Was named player-manager of the St. Louis Cardinals in 1925. He led them to their first world championship the next year.

  • Considered by many baseball historians to be the greatest right-handed hitter in the annals of the game.

  • Hornsby was not only a great hitter for average, he led the league in slugging percentage 10 times.

  • An extremely caustic individual, Hornsby was one of the most disliked players in the history of the game. There are many stories floating around exhibiting the disdain that fellow players felt towards Hornsby. An example: he was replaced as manager of the Cubs in August of 1932 by Charlie Grimm. When the team ended up winning the World Series that year, the players voted to not give him any share of their winnings.
