1941-44/46-63 St. Louis Cardinals

  • Had 17 .300-plus seasons, a modern NL record.

  • Won three MVP awards--1943, 1946, and 1948--the first NL player to do so.

  • Appeared in 24 All Star games. Holds All Star records for most homers (6), extra-base hits (8), and total bases (40).

  • Won seven batting titles.

  • Started out as a pitching prospect until a shoulder injury forced him into the outfield.

  • Led the NL in runs scored 5 times, a major league record that he shares with Rogers Hornsby and George Burns.

  • Missed winning the Triple Crown in 1948 by a single homer. His .376 average that year was the NL's highest since 1930.

  • Appeared on three World Series winners--1942, 1944, and 1946.

  • Won his final batting crown in 1957 at the age of 37.

  • Elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1969.

  • Though these records have since been surpassed, at the time of Musial's retirement, he held the major league marks for most extra-base hits and total bases and the NL records for most runs, hits, doubles, and RBI.
