Babe Ruth
Outfield

1914-19 Boston Red Sox
1920-34 New York Yankees
1935 Boston Braves

  • The most famous home run hitter in the game, for over thirty years Ruth held the two most revered records in the history of the game--714 career home runs and 60 home runs in a single season.

  • Ruth started his career as a pitcher for the Red Sox. He was extremely successful on the mound, with a career record of 94-46 and a 2.28 ERA, but Ruth was destined to make his reputation in the batters box.

  • Pitched the longest shutout in World Series history, 14 innings against the Dodgers in 1916.

  • Set a major league season record when he hit 29 home runs in 1919. Then in 1920, after being traded to the Yankees, Ruth shattered his own record when he hit 54. No other team hit that many during the 1920 season.

  • The Yankees won the first four of their World Championships with Ruth leading the way.

  • Led the league in walks 11 times, including a record 170 walks in 1923.

  • Also led the league in RBI six times and slugging percentage an amazing 13 times.

  • Ruth was one of the first five players ever elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, 1936.

  • Ruth had many nicknames. "Babe," of course being the obvious one. He was also known as, among other names, the "Sultan of Swat" and the "Bambino."

  • Yankee Stadium is still known as "The House that Ruth Built." The Yankees were the first team to draw over a million fans in a single season when the Stadium opened in 1923. Ruth hit .393 with 41 HR and 131 RBI that season.
