A Pirate’s Love by Johanna Lindsay Avon Books ISBN: 0380400480 April, 2000 (Reissue) (Historical Pirate Romance) 3 Hearts $6.99

When beautiful Bettina Verlaine sets out from her home in France to the island of St. Martin, her goal is to marry the handsome young Comte de Lambert who awaits her on the tropical island. However while in route, her voyage is interrupted when Tristan, a privateer captures Bettina and her made.

In the beginning, Tristan’s plan is to ransom Bettina to her waiting fiancé. And, during this time, he takes advantage of the young virgin who is promised to another. Could this act be categorized as “rape” in the beginning? That’s hard to say--after all, Bettina does nothing to stop the act, even encouraging Tristan at times. Yet, she always ends up angry afterwards--it’s rather confusing. Eventually after taking part in several sexual acts, Bettina manages an escape--but Tristan catches her and again, the animalistic ritual between the couple begins.

Again Bettina escapes and makes her way to St. Martin to the safety of her fiancé. But once there, Bettina overhears her intended tell Tristan that he has no plans of marrying the “soiled” Bettina. Bettina struggles with her feelings for Tristan--although he is the lesser of the two evils and she’s grown close to him - albeit against her will, Bettina finds herself left with little choice in the matter when she discovers she is carrying Tristan’s child. In the end, Tristan and Bettina will find a way to overcome their bad start together and work toward a happy ending--but getting to that point is what makes this book a winner!

Although I still do not understand why this highly acclaimed author found it necessary to include so many apparent “rape” scenes in this story, it doesn’t take enough away from the book to lower my rating or opinion of this “classic” Lindsay tale. A Pirate’s Love is a sweeping historical romance that is a bit more realistic that others--depicting the pillaging and plundering pirates from history, but the somewhat belittling rape episode will be easily forgotten if you put it to the side and just enjoy the story taking place all around that. Although this is NOT Johanna Lindsay at her best--it’s not her worst by any stretch. -Karen Goodman

The Orchid Hunter by, Jill Marie Landis Jove Publishing ISBN: 051512768X March, 2000 (Historical Romance) 4 Hearts $6.99

Written by one of the leading ladies of historical romance---The Orchid Hunter is spectacular! In the year 1850, Joya Penn truly loves her life and raised on Matarenga, a remote island off the coast of Africa. Being raised by her father, a horticulturist “the orchid hunter,” she had a freedom that most young girls at that age didn’t have--the ability to play and enjoy the tranquil jungle setting she was offered. However, Joya always felt as though something profound was missing from her life, but could never pinpoint exactly what it was.

Everything in Joya’s life suddenly changes when Trevor Mandeville walks into her little remote part of the world. Trevor travels to Africa in search of a perfect orchid to give to Queen Victoria. What he finds, shocks him to his very soul. From the moment Trevor sets eyes on Joya, he is certain that she is the stolen twin of his adopted sister Janelle. ,p> Joya accompanies Trevor to England where she is united with her sibling and begins to find the answers to all questions and “missing” pieces of her life. One hitch through all this is that Trevor is “true’ English gentleman with with his starched collar conventions which Joya finds confusing. Having been raised away from English society, Joya must learn through trial and error how a Lady should behave--Joya faces more than her share of culture shock during this time and in the end it will be patience, and love that unite this couple.

Jill Marie Landis always comes through with her unique characters, brilliantly written storyline and witty dialogue. The Orchid Hunter comes to life as the author paints a vivid full-color picture of what life must have been like for Joya growing up in Africa, then moving to the cold, damp stiff-collard society. (No2 Review) Lover’s & Other Lunatics by, Eugenia Riley 2 Hearts

What could have been a very entertaining book had a few too many sub plots and characters that just didn’t fit in to the story bery smoothly. Some of the supporting characters could have been fleshed out a little better, and one in particular that I kept expecting to end up being THE bad guy, instead was one of the good guys. I gave this novel a 2 heart rating. -Karen King
